I realize this breaks rule #2 of the "Chat Board Rules," but many of us have been posting here for 8+ years. I hope we've earned the right to do a "subjective opinion" thread, even if it's just this once.
I am curious to know what our fellow board members' top 10 all-time favorite songs are. I haven't come up with my own list yet, but as long as Pat is okay with it, I'd love to see what everyone's favorites are.

Great list, John! Interestingly, just recently someone asked if I would play "More" as a dinner/cocktail song at their wedding, but they specifically requested the Frank Sinatra cover.

I'm actually doing a weekly feature on the radio show called "Ron's Dream Jukebox". I always wanted a jukebox as a kid, and if I had one, I would have loaded it up with 100 45s. What I've been doing for the last year and change is populating my dream jukebox, one 45 per week. (I'll reach the full 100 later this year right before my 45th birthday. I planned the timing pretty well.) My only criterion for eligibility is that it was available somewhere on a 7" 45. (And that I love the song, of course.)

Thanks, Aaron! Strange coincidence there, regarding "More." That's got to be one you don't get requests for everyday/week/year/decade/century.
A friend had asked me to list a baker's dozen of my favorite singles several years ago, but I had a difficult time stopping at just thirteen, so I threw in an extra thirteen as sort of a buy-one-get-one-free bonus. You can view them pictorially at the link below, but please copy it and re-paste it in your browser (rather than just clicking on it) because the image size is 706kb. And since Ron already opened the "more than ten" floodgates, I edited my list to add the "overflow." :)

Awesome list, Ron! I do hope you update us with the remaining 29 records as you come up with them.
Very cool collage, John! I like the promo CD single you threw in there, too :) It's always fantastic to be able to see the record labels, and I appreciate you taking the time to scan and post them.

Aaron, I made that collage back in 2009, so the only "heavy lifting" this time involved re-sizing and posting it. In doing so, I didn't get the chance to thoroughly peruse "Ron's Dream Jukebox" until now (agree that it's a great lineup... The Monroes!) and was quite pleasantly surprised to see that Ron and I share two songs between the two lists submitted thus far:
"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" - The Byrds
"Never Been Any Reason" - Head East
Head East?? Who knew?!
In addition, Ron's number A61 on his dream jukebox ("Girls Talk") has occupied selection A8 on my Seeburg jukebox since 1979. When I compiled my original list, I soon realized I'd overlooked "Girls Talk," but didn't want to remake the collage and - more importantly - couldn't bring myself to have to drop one of the others from the list. Let's just sneak it in as a hitbound extra at #27. :)
Aaron, thanks for starting this thread. It's really interesting to see where the "sweet spot" favorite years fall among the board's wide range of contributors.

I like so many different types of music that the only list I've ever really compiled were my top 5 favorite rock songs. These are my "turn it up!" songs, the ones that always make me reach for the volume control:
1) The Beatles - Revolution
2) Def Leppard - Rock It
3) Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
4) Billy Squier - Everybody Wants You
5) Whitesnake - In The Still Of The Night
...Yes, it leans 80s. Guilty as charged; I was a teenager in the 80s, so no one should be shocked. ;-)
What IS shocking is that neither of my all-time favorite artists show up on the list: Thomas Dolby, and Prince! I didn't feel either of them had a song that fits this collection.
To do a "complete" list of favorite songs, I'd have to include:
Percy Faith's Theme From A Summer Place,
Nine Inch Nails' Closer,
Snowfall by Claude Thornhill,
Louis Prima's Jump Jive & Wail,
Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye & Kimbra...
It would just be impossible to get the list narrowed down to anything manageable.
...I love music!!!

Interesting list, Gene! Good thing Casey wasn't counting them down or he'd be wearing a neck brace as a result of that NIN-Percy Faith-Whitesnake segment. :)
Also interesting that you determined your list on a "crank-'em!" basis. My own criteria was based on songs I had to play at least two or three or more times in a row (which, in turn, explained why those original styrene "Green, Green" and "Tambourine Man" grooves turned white within weeks.)

Great lists, everyone! Interesting, Doug, you're the same age I am. And, like yourself, it is HARD to come up with a Top 10...so I'm gonna bend the rules and turn this list into my (naturally) Top 40:
1) I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite - Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart (1967)
2) I Wanna Be With You - The Raspberries (1972)
3) Baby Blue - Badfinger (1972)

5) Never Be Anyone Else But You - Ricky Nelson (1958)
6) Dizzy - Tommy Roe (1969)
7) This Magic Moment - Jay & The Americans (1968)
8) Can I Get To Know You Better - The Turtles (1966)
9) For Bobbi - The Mitchell Trio (1965)
10) Yesterday Once More - The Carpenters (1973)
11) Three Times In Love - Tommy James (1980)
12) Hearts In Her Eyes - The Searchers (1979)

14) A World Of Our Own - The Seekers (1965)
15) Yellow Balloon - The Yellow Balloon (1967)
16) Heaven Knows - The Grass Roots (1969)
17) Rock N Roll Girl - The Beat (1979)
18) Sugar, Sugar - The Archies (1969)
19) Too Late - Shoes (1979)
20) Get Down - Gilbert O'Sullivan (1973)

32) Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - Edison Lighthouse (1970)

39) I'm Gonna Make You Mine - Lou Christie (1969)
40) Girls Talk - Dave Edmunds (1979)
I can't believe how difficult it was to get this list down to 40 (although I guess I do have a Top 10, as I ranked them, but didn't feel it was representative of my tastes quite enough). There were so many songs I thought would be on here but weren't. It looks like I skewed either late 60's or 1979. Strange.
By the way, Head East's "Never Been Any Reason" is probably in my Top 200 - must be a Midwestern thing??

Raising hand, also 47!
I know there's no way on earth i'd be able to whittle mine
down to 10 or even 40. There's just so many... and so
many genres/moods.
But i love reading everyone else's lists!!!
I see so many and think "uh-huh, yup, me too..." ... or
"OMG i might have forgot to list that!"
Now the fun part is going to be looking up some of the
tunes i might not know!

Since I just can't do 10 songs out of literally
thousands, my list would change from hour to hour. But,
if I were to randomly come up with a list of any ten
songs, they might be:
Light My Fire - The Doors - 45 version
Love's Theme - Love Unlimited Orchestra
Magic - Pilot
Ebony Eyes - Bob Welch
Got To Be There - Michael Jackson
Mickey - Toni Basil
Hero Hakes A fall - Bangles
Reelin' In The Years - Steely Dan
Downtown - Petula Clark
Hello Goodbye - The Beatles

I don't know... Off the top of my head, these are ten
songs I not only jam out to, really get into when I
listen to them, but also catch myself singing them when
I'm not listening to them, even if I haven't heard them
for a long time. I don't think I could rank a very
favorite song, so these are in no particular order:
- Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' - Michael Jackson (the
album version... never fails to at least get my foot
tapping)
- Alphabet St. - Prince (the album version)
- Niagara - Barbra Streisand (maybe my favorite melody of
any song, ever)
- All Through the Night - Cyndi Lauper (again, the melody
on the chorus is really appealing to me for some
reason... sometimes I just hum it without singing the
words)
- Fountain of Sorrow - Joan Baez (from her "Diamonds and
Rust" album, one of my two favorite albums)
- Close to the Borderline - Billy Joel (from my other
very favorite album, "Glass Houses")
- 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - Paul Simon (which I
hardly EVER listen to for some reason, but it's one of
those that takes me back to a really specific time and
place, and a happy place at that)
- Play a Simple Melody - Bing & Gary Crosby (phenomenally
good, if you like Dixieland)
- I Had the Craziest Dream - Harry James Orchestra with
Helen Forrest (again, that melody, but Helen Forrest also
had one of the most gorgeous voices I've ever heard)
- Deep in a Dream - Artie Shaw with Helen Forrest (lots
of versions of this song, but this uptempo version is my
favorite, again with the great Helen Forrest)
Subject to change without notice. :D

Good topic, Aaron.
I naturally selected 30 songs from the 70's to the 90's. Sorry, it's difficult for me to select" My Top 10." My selections were very famous songs only. I feel that I tend to like songs of superb melody and great performance. Since I'm not able to comprehend meanings of lyric perfectly. But, melodies are universal!

Paper Roses - MARIE OSMOND (1973)
A Little Bit More - DR. HOOK (1976)

I'd have a hard time ranking the all-time favorites, but what I will do is go year-by-year starting with 1970 and listing my 5, 10 (or more) favorites from that year. This is easier because I kinda compiled these lists as each year actually ended (well, starting in 1973). Here are the '70s. Eventually, I'll type up the '80s
1970:
1 Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - Edison Lighthouse (hence, my moniker!) This probably would be my #1 favorite of all time, if I had to narrow it down to one.
2 My Baby Loves Lovin' - White Plains
3 (You've Got Me) Dangling on a String - Chairmen of the Board
4 No Matter What - Badfinger
5 Tears of a Clown - Miracles
6 I Think I Love You - Partridge Family
7 Cracklin' Rosie - Neil Diamond
8 Every Little Move She Makes - Tony Burrows
9 Give Me Just a Little More Time - Chairmen of the Board
10 Come and Get It - Badfinger
1971:
1 What Is Life - George Harrison
2 Happy XMas - John Lennon

Like Mark I can't really pick just ten. However, here are ten from the first half of the '80s that I always turn the volume up for (in no particular order):
1. Train In Vain (Stand By Me) - The Clash
2. Hot In The City - Billy Idol
3. Breaking Away - Balance
4. Personally - Karla Bonoff
5. Boulevard - Jackson Browne
6. Sometimes A Fantasy (commercial 45 with the cold ending) - Billy Joel
7. Everyday I Write The Book - Elvis Costello & the Attractions
8. He Can't Love You - Michael Stanley Band
9. Just Got Lucky - JoBoxers
10. Radio Ga-Ga (45 edit) - Queen

Since we're on a personal note I do see Three Dog Night and Gilbert O'Sullivan on the lists. I'd have to say thet for the former "Pieces of April" would have to be my #1 favorite. Backstory: I was the morning DJ on WFCS, the FM station at Central CT State College in 1974. A girl called the request line and asked me to play some Three Dog Night songs. It was her favorite group. We spoke for a while, I put down the phone and asked some other staffers if they knew this girl Peggy. They said she won on the trivia show frequently. I asked if she looked good they said she did. I asked her if she wanted to meet and we did. That was on April 19,1974. Good memory? Maybe. We got married on April 19, 1975 and had 13 years before amicably divorcing.
I went to a respected hospital in New England for a third opinion by arrangement of my doctor. I saw a world renowned oncologist who specialized in multiple myeloma. He made small talk and I related the above story. He never heard of Three Dog Night.....Hey, I missed Woodstock. That does something to you.
One day I was in the waiting room at my local cancer center waiting for a blood draw. Someone in an adjacent reception area had an iPad or XM playing oldies. I heard The Animals "House of the Rising Sun". Not exactly a positive song for that environment. After the blood test it played "Alone Again (Naturally)"...

That "Home And Dry" makes your list means you're a man of taste and charisma. Vastly underrated (and way too undercharted) single.

Why, thank you! Gerry Rafferty's amazing City To City album is the only one to get two entries in Ron's Dream Jukebox.

OK I'll try:
Ozark Mountain Daredevils - Jackie Blue
Gary Numan - Cars
Kenny Loggins - Heart to Heart
Steve Winwood - Valerie (both versions)
Camel - Unevensong
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
Foreigner - Urgent
Cliff Richard - A Little In Love
Little River Band - Night Owls
Journey - Lights
And see, I'm not sure that's really a comprehensive list at all. For example, I really like the Jermaine Jackson "... Serious" track mentioned earlier (mind you, that didn't really get a lot of airplay in Southern Ontario - thank heavens I lived in near proximity to the greater Buffalo, NY area). I never mentioned Gerry Rafferty, but "... Next Time" and Right Down the Line" are gems. How about Gary Numan's "We Are Friends Electric"? See, too many.... lol

I know. I'm right with you. Aaron would only get a better picture of my tastes if he let me put down 500 songs (just for starters). But see, repetition gets to me (I know I'm radio-cycle minded), so I'd want a subset of another 500 songs for lesser rotation.
:)

Nice to see this thread revived. :-) I agree w/ most others here - honestly, when you own as much music as I do (collected for over 33 years now), it's impossible to pick just 10 songs, or even 100. And even if you went w/ 100, how do you realistically differentiate between how much you like the song you list at #1 and the one you put at #100 - and will you feel the same way tomorrow??? For that reason, I usually think in terms of categories, for the sake of narrowing the field - i.e., favorite songs that all share a common thread (or two), whether they're tied together by origin, subject matter, time period, genre, chart performance, etc., etc...
So for this post, I've chosen 50 songs - all from the '80s, and all by Canadian acts - that for inexplicable reasons, somehow MISSED the top 40 here in the U.S. (and therefore, aren't included in Pat's on-line db)! I've simply listed them chronologically, as most of these have been favorites of mine for 15 or more years now, and I enjoy them all just as much as any of my top faves that did make the top 40 during the '80s. Most (but not all) were top 40 hits in Canada, and at least half of them deserved to be top 10 hits here in the U.S. as well! About 25% of the songs did actually scrape into the "bottom 60" of the pop charts here ("Limelight", "Baby Step Back", "Your Daddy Don't Know", "New Girl Now", etc.), while several others performed quite well on Billboard's "Top Rock Tracks" chart ("Lunatic Fringe", "Anyway Anytime", "Eyes of a Stranger", "Devil's Deck", etc.), or even the dance chart ("Echo Beach", "Gonna Get Over You", etc.). For those who may wish to track them down, I've also listed the record label & catalog no. of the U.S. 45 that these songs were issued on, where applicable - remarkably, 37 of the 50 (74%) were released as 45s here in the States as well, while another 7 saw their original parent album issued here, but no 45 (while the remaining 6 never came out here at all). And because this was the dawn/apex of the video era, and most were singles, that means practically all of them also had a music video that was made for them, which aired on MTV and/or MuchMusic back in the day - so I've painstakingly provided a link to ALL 50 songs on YouTube, so you can hear them, and decide for yourself (just click on the artist/title). :-) If you only have time to listen to a fraction of them, I recommend going w/ the 20 that I've numbered in bold - I don't think you'll be disappointed, if you're not already familiar w/ them. Hopefully most people here will find something new that they'll want to add to their collection on 45 or CD, so let's celebrate the "Great White North"!
