OK, Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" only made it to #42, but that's CLOSE to top 40... and if anybody will know the answer to this, it will be you guys (and gals).
The album version runs about five minutes, but the single version is listed on all labels as 3:48: http://www.discogs.com/Molly-Hatchet-Flirtin-With-Disaster/master/129342 - Flirtin' With Disaster - singles - Discogs I wasn't able to find a YouTube video with the single version, so I'm needing your help to figure out if it is an early fade, a series of edits, or a label misprint. Thanks in advance for your help! so many AOR classics transcend top 40, 'specially in my
old stomping grounds. AOR was on as much as top 40 everywhere we went, so this was a huge hit. And at parties this get's turned WAY up. I do remember the 45 is edited, because it has the cold ending. But i've only heard the LP version for years. |

Thanks to eriejwg's help, I was able to edit the album version down to the single version. These times may be a bit off but should get you close, and are based on the times as you edit rather than the entire file unedited:
Delete 0:00 - 0:03 (remove the guitars, start with the drums) Delete 1:05 - 1:37 (remove lyrics to jump to next verse) Delete 2:11 - 2:22 (edit to jump to vocal shout) Delete 2:34 - 2:44 (edit of the guitar solo) The resulting file runs 3:48. I used the version from the 1990 greatest hits CD instead of the remastered "Flirtin' With Disaster" CD for two reasons: #1, digital limiting is obvious looking at the waveform, and #2 there's a "glitch" just a couple of seconds in, like the magnetism on the source tape is goofed up or something. I don't know what's going on there, but it's not on the 1990 / Greatest Hits CD. I remember hearing this everywhere I went in the early 80s. If it was summertime, if it was by a pool or the lake, or just the weekend, or if it was a bar, or just a bunch of guys together, this song played. I'm glad to have the correct single version now! Thanks, but would you mind taking another look at your instructions? I tried the above edits using the version from the "Rock The First" CD (where it runs just under 4:58), and the resulting file was about 3:58, not 3:48. What's the running time of the Greatest Hits version? I noticed that the opening guitar on the Rock the First version lasts about :05, not :03 as you note above. Maybe a typo in the instructions, or perhaps there are some different versions appearing on some CDs (unfortunately this is my only CD with this song, so I can't confirm if it's the correct LP version). |

I'll re-time my edits, hopefully this weekend. The version I had faded the guitars at the beginning slightly in, so that certainly could have thrown everything else off.

I finally decided to tackle the edits to recreate the
45. There's a couple tricky guitar solo edits between 2:20 and 2:35 on the 45. I think I got as close as I could but the resulting file runs 3:48. |

I don't recall the instructions as it was a long time ago but I can say the cuts in the guitar breaks are tricky, you have to know if the cut is on a down-beat or a snare... MM |
