can anyone confirm that the song "candle in the wind" by elton john that is on the european cd single from 1987 is the exact version that's on the us commercial 45.....the 45 sounds like the version from the live from australia cd but with the applause edited out.......i've asked a few sellers of the european cd sgl and the liner notes say that the version on the european cd sgl is NOT with the melbourne symphony......anyone shed light on this.... ------------- edtop40 |

Hmm, I see why your sellers are saying that -- there's an asterisk next to two of the tracks on the album, indicating "With the Mebourne Symphony Orchestra," but not next to "Candle in the Wind" or "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me." I don't know why that is. But your sellers are missing the lower right-hand corner that says, "All tracks taken from the album 'Elton John Live in Australia.'
I own both the CD single and the live album, and I assure you they are the same version, but the CD single has the applause filtered out. It's Rocket EJSCD15. The UK single version, which is the same live performance without most of the applause, is available on Now That's What I Call Music 14 (Virgin EMI PolyGram [UK] CD NOW 11, 1988).
I did an A/B with the version from To Be Continued, to confirm that it is the same performance. This was recorded with a "crowd" mike or two, and the crowd track(s) were muted for the UK single. Does this qualify as a "remix"? This may be the only instance I can think of where crowd noise is removed for a particular version of the song; the '60s and '70s had plenty of songs where crowd noise is added, including Elton's own "Bennie and The Jets". |

| That's the same single version used in the US --- the crowd mics were muted. You're right; it's not common to hear ALL of the crowd mics muted on a live performance. There have, however, been several instances where some of the crowd mics were muted for a single mix. (For example, "Cherry Cherry - Live" has muted crowd mics at the very beginning.) |

Not to get off-topic, but while I am confidant that "Candle In The Wind 87" is indeed a true 'live' recording, I am not so sure if some of the hits we call 'live' are really 'live' recordings. Your example of "Cherry Cherry - from 'Hot August Night'" is one where I'm not-so-sure. A close listen to the LP mix & the single mix with overdubbed lead guitar reveals at least certain instruments that were definitely studio-recorded (in particular that bass track). I'm not even sure if Procol Harum's "Conquistador" was a true 'live' recording. Certainly the 5th Dimension's "Never My Love" was a studio recording (I don't believe bassist Joe Osborn ever went on tour with the 5th Dimension, he was too busy in West Coast studios to hit the road much). This is purely conjecture on my part; sorry for the thread hijack. Andy |

Interesting observation, Andy. I'm sure you are correct that there are several "live" hits that weren't really live. Another example is John Denver's "Sweet Surrender," which may have been mentioned in another thread. Another obvious one is "Get Ready" (LP version) by Rare Earth, although I'm not sure they claim it to be "live."
Regarding "Cherry Cherry," I have to be honest that I've only heard the vinyl 45 and the version that appears on one of his hits collections (labeled in the database as "45 version but with audience applause on the introduction..."). I didn't realize that the close-to-45-version on CD was also a different mix from the LP. I just assumed that it was an edit of the LP version, but that they couldn't re-create the 45 version exactly because of the applause. |

| Just got in a promo 45 for this today. Having been over 20 years since I heard the 'muted' version, it sounds very odd without the crowd, having heard only that version for such a long time. Run time is 3:48, ends cold. |

| On the "30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" CD of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", there's a version of "Candle in the Wind" called the "Acoustic Mix" (a bonus cut). Does anyone have this CD and know what this version is exactly? Is it the main 1973 version but with some instrumentation removed? Or is it a different vocal or with some instruments added? |

Pat, I see that the DJ CD single information accidentally was added to the database under the 1997 version of "Candle In The Wind." The promo CD details above are actually for the 1987 "Live In Australia" version. | Attn: Pat. I just picked up an original Japan-for-U.S. pressing of Elton John's 1985 compilation titled Your Songs, on MCA MCAD-31016. It seems you have this CD already, as you DO have it listed under the other three top 40 hits that are featured on it, which are "Your Song", "Friends", and "Tiny Dancer". However, note that track 7 is "Candle in the Wind", which is not currently shown in the on-line database. "Candle in the Wind" has an actual time of (3:46) on my copy, which is in line w/ all of the CDs you have labeled as the "(”Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” vinyl LP version)" for its 1987-88 chart run... |

Aaron, Just wondering but there are two different versions I remember of this song. One is on an MCA Hits Sampler Vol 3 which has no ending applause. Then there is a version on the 1995 Love Songs Compilation CD by Elton that has the applause and then the fade out. Which one is the true 45? Are they both the 45 since they both are the same version with alternative endings? And what version is on the CD single that you have, the no applause or the applause and fade?? Thanks in advance! |
