I was listening to my promo CD of "Through The Wire" today, and my ears were detecting a slight amount of lossy compression. Sure enough, when I ripped the tracks, both the "Main" and "Instrumental" tracks appear to have been mastered from mp3s or some other lossy source.

For those interested in the details of the promo, here they are:

DEFR 15925-2 (no listed times)
1. Main (actual 4:30)
2. Instrumental (actual 4:30)
3. Call Out Hook

I also happen to own an Australian import single, which contains the following:

1. Through The Wire (Radio Edit)
2. Two Worlds (Radio Edit)
3. Through The Wire (Instrumental)
4. Through The Wire (Video - enhanced CD)

Unfortunately, they used the same lossy sources on this import as they did for the US promo.

Lastly, I checked "The College Dropout," (Explicit) and it does contain a lossless copy of "Through The Wire." Unfortunately, though, the LP version is missing 50 seconds of the longer 45 version due to one edit and an early fade.

For Pat:
The database currently reads "remix". I've never detected any "remixing" between the "Main" version on the promo and the LP--just a length difference due to editing.
