The song "Three Hearts In A Tangle" by Roy Drusky reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 but does not meet the criteria for database inclusion. My U.S. commercial 45 (Decca 31193) states the run time as (2:44), but I timed it at (2:40).

There is a version on the Ace UK CD, The Golden Age Of American Popular Music - The Country Hits, which the notes claim is from Decca 31193, but it is actually a completely different recording.

Here's another instance where I assumed I had the correct hit version of a song on an Ace UK CD, but now come to find out I don't! It's always exasperating to have to add a song back on to my list of Top 40 hits I'm missing on CD. Nonetheless, I really do appreciate you bringing this to our attention, Paul.

According to the http://www.allmusic.com/song/three-hearts-in-a-tangle-t1755301 - All Music website, Roy Drusky's "Three Hearts in a Tangle" appears on several Time/Life various artist CD compilations with a listed run time of 2:44. Can anyone confirm if these discs, or any others, contain the correct hit version?

Paul:
What is the difference you hear that tips you that Ace used a different recording? I have this song on the following disc (but have no 45 to compare it to). If you tell me what to listen for I'll tell you if it matches the version I have or not.

Time-Life R808-01 Classic Country 1960-1964

I don't have the 45 but I have one of the Time-Life discs (Country USA 1961) and the Ace UK cd. Totally different versions. The T-L version starts right into the chorus, where the Ace cd begins with an 8 second instrumental introduction, followed by the verse "Tonight, as I sit by my window..."

I may be wrong, but the Ace version always sounded "updated" to me. In other words, like a recording done (at least) a few years after the hit came out. Roy Drusky's voice sounds different (smoother), and the musical sounds seem more recent than 1961.

On the T/L Classic Country two disc set the song immediately starts with the vocal and the first lyrics sung are the title of the song.

My Decca 45 matches the description of the Time-Life version supplied by the above two posters.

What I suspect is that the version on the Ace UK CD is the re-recording made for the Mercury Greatest Hits album. Because of all the mergers in recent years, both versions are now owned by Universal, from whom the Ace CD states the song was licensed. It appears that Universal sent Ace a tape of the Mercury version instead of the Decca version and that no one at Ace was aware of it.

The Time/Life version is the correct Decca hit. It matches my Decca 45 RPM single.
