Was there actually an LP version for this? Seems odd that multiple

Dunno what was on the stock single, but my promo has a 4:21 version on one side and a 3:29 one on the other (both are listed times).

Album version of "Monterey" faded in the intro; the single was intact. First known stereo single version was actually a cross-faded composite of a rechanneled single intro crossfaded into the stereo album supervised by Mr. Dennis M. Drake, a very respected reissue producer (mainly for Polygram) of the late 80s thru the 90s. ('Best Of Eric Burdon & The Animals 1966-1968') The first issue of the fully true stereo version was on a 2004 Abcko package 'Retrospective'. Credits include Bob Ludwig, Steve Rosenthal, Peter Mew & Teri Landi. Andy |

The album was a few seconds shorter than the single due to the fade-in. I'm sorry I can't be more accurate; I no longer own 'The Twain Shall Meet' LP and I'm only going by memory... Andy |

I bought The Twain Shall Meet vinyl LP when it first came out and skipped the 45. On the LP, side one opens with the short sitar/spoken "in the beginning" bit, which - while banded separately from cut two, "Monterey" - is not credited on either the jacket or label and is thus considered part of "Monterey."
The "in the beginning" segment segues into "Monterey," with the latter gradually faded in. The ending fadeout of "Monterey" then segues into cut 3, "Just The Thought." So the LP version of "Monterey" isn't in-the-clear on either end. The Polydor Band Of Gold series reissue 45 contained the 3:29 edit fashioned as Andy described above. |

can anyone confirm the actual running time of the dj edit
that states the listed run time of 3:29.....the copy john sent me runs 3:34.... ------------- edtop40 |

I now have a digital copy of the LP version from iTunes, but it seems to be pitched up compared to the single version. Was it that way on the LP? Also, can the stock single be edited to match the promo? ------------- Doug --------------- All of the good signatures have been taken. |

I don't have the stock 45, but the vinyl LP cut runs slower than the Band Of Gold reissue 45, but faster than the Abkco Retrospective CD track. Both of those speed differences are somewhat significant, too. UPDATE: The DJ 45 can't be replicated from CD, since the fade extends longer than it does on the CDs, where it was faded out before seguing into "Just The Thought" from The Twain Shall Meet (the Retrospectives track actually does continue for about two seconds beyond where the segue starts.) However, the Band Of Gold reissue 45 *can* be replicated from CD. :) |

I have a copy of the MGM DJ 45 which runs 3:34.
Was Pat's actual time in the database from the DJ 45 or the listed time? |

The DJ 45 is in mono, really compressed and may be a
dedicated mix. |

Just tried replicating the Retrospective version to
match the DJ 45. Duplicated the edit John mentioned above. I didn't need to speed it up but the vocals don't match from 3:09 on once you make the edit. Was the stereo version an alternate take? |

John, after watching a YouTube clip of the MGM stock 45 playing, it's the same take, with the complete, in-the-clear fade, unlike the CDs. The difference is that the post-"I think that maybe I'm dreaming" ending (thank you, Byrds!) is further edited on the DJ 45, but not on the stock 45. So the DJ 45 can be edited from the stock 45, if that's any consolation. Paging the Top 40 Music On Vinyl forum! ;) |

I've continued to do some detective work on this. There
is a Japanese version of The Twain Shall Meet that has both the LP version of Monterey as well as mono single versions of Sky Pilot Part 1, Sky Pilot Part 2 and the 4:25 mono 45 version of Monterey. Great news! The DJ edit of Monterey can be recreated from the mono 45 version which is track 11 on the CD. There are 2 edits which create a file that runs 3:34. |
