Ed:

I tried re-creating the 45 version from CD a while back and unfortunately it cannot be done. The 45 is not only a remix, but I believe it also contains unique audio toward the end of the song not found on the LP version.

As I noted here in another thread last July, although missing from Pat's book/database at the time, the original parent album of "Can't Shake Loose" - "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" - was indeed issued on CD here in the U.S. back in '83, and of course contains the LP version of that hit. As far as I knew, that was the song's lone U.S. appearance on CD to date - until last night, while perusing eBay...

It seems that the (very) underrated song has FINALLY made another U.S. CD appearance, courtesy of Time-Life. :-) It's been included on their 2-CD V/A compilation titled "Classic Soft Rock: Heat of the Moment". I don't yet have this collection myself, so I'm afraid I can't provide a catalog no. or track length/version at this time, although I do own another volume from the same series, "Classic Soft Rock: The Air That I Breathe", and it's dated 2006. Luckily, the entire "Classic Soft Rock" series is still very much in print, although most eBay sellers are only offering the entire 19-CD set as a lot (i.e., no volumes a la carte)...

So could we have the CD debut of the "45 version" here??? :-)

BTW, I'm not sure I'd classify "Can't Shake Loose" as "soft rock" - especially in light of the fact that the promo 12" single contained the "Special AOR Mix", not to mention the song failed to crack "Billboard"'s AC chart - as I personally loved it for its uptempo vibe (ran out & bought "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" on cassette when it first came out), but a welcome CD appearance, nevertheless...

Well, that certainly has my curiousity piqued, but unfortunately I can't justify that much cash for the entire set just to see if the 45 version is there (I already own multiple CD versions of every single other song in that set!).

I have purchased several stock 45s of this song, and every single one had poor sonics, either due to the mix or bad 80s pressing quality...it's hard to tell. While I would love to get the 45 version on CD, I must say this is one case where I actually like the LP mix better...it has a cleaner sound than the 45 mix.

You can get a reasonable facsimile of the 45 version by performing the necessary edits to the LP version and slowing it down, but for us "45 purists" we know it's not the same.

I was always surprised this song wasn't a bigger hit. It was very catchy and had a great pop-rock punch to it.

The Time-Life website has a track listing with run times, and it says it runs 4:21, which, if accurate, means the album version.

That's precisely why I was sold on it from the first time I heard it on top 40 radio back in '83, and ran out and bought the cassette! :-) In my eyes, it WAS a pretty big hit, and got moderate airplay where I lived at the time - but alas, the suits at the record cos. seem to falsely believe that most folks won't remember (or like, in the event they missed it the first time around) a #20-something pop hit, so we have to put up w/ hearing "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and/or "Love Shack" on new '80s compilations YET AGAIN... :-(

Luckily, "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" is still readily available on CD as an import, and it's also worth mentioning that "Can't Shake Loose" is also included on Faltskog's 1998 European solo collection, "That's Me: The Greatest Hits", which I intend to order shortly...

Thanks for the additional detective work, Brian W.!
