my commercial 45 for the stevie wonder song "higher ground"
issued as tamla 54235 states the run time on the label as
3:10 and does indeed run that length......the import 2 cd
set contains the 3:44 lp version while the USA counterpart
contains the 3:10 45 version.....another fyi for the board

Is the single version an early fade or are there edit points?

My notes indicate the 45 edits out a verse from 1:48 to 2:19 and fades earlier
than the LP.

The database says Definitive Collection has the 3:10 45 version, and Number 1s has the 3:44 LP version.

The version on my copy of Definitive Collection seems to be the 45 version, fading out at 3:10, and the section from 1:48 to 2:19 is indeed missing (at 1:48 the lyric is "lovers" instead of "teachers").

My copy of Number 1s is a digital reissue. There, the song runs 3:45, but it's not the LP version. It has the same section cut out as on Definitive Collection, and instead of fading out by 3:10, the fade starts at 3:05 and the music goes on longer than the album version. Are the actual CDs this way too?

It seems that the CD version of Number 1s has the same edit that's on the digital issue.

The LP version fades from 3:27 to 3:42, at which point the next song on Innervisions starts.

The Original Musiquarium collection from 1982 extends farther than anything previously released to that point, fading from 3:35 to 3:47.

But Number 1s goes way beyond those two versions (maybe to the end of the performance?) If you were to splice back in the 1:48-to-2:19 that's edited out of the 45, the version on Number 1's would fade from 3:35 to 4:16!

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one http://www.crapfromthepast.com" rel="nofollow - Crap From The Past .

Wow, I would love a 4:16 version of "Higher Ground" !

Does anyone know if it exists anywhere on an import or
digital service?

You'll have to edit together such a version yourself using the LP version from Innervisions and the "extended fade" single edit
off of Number 1s.

Thanks Ron for letting us know about this extended single
mix. It was a compilation with an ugly cover that I didn't
give a second glance at. Even if I saw the timing, I would
have thought it was an early fade.

Yeah, I feared that.

I'm good with editing, but I'm not excellent at inserting
passages with different EQs, different compression levels
and different peak limiting...

I can probably make it happen if nobody has done so yet, but I don't have the #1s disc.

Would be nice to see a proper CD reissue for Innervisions.
As I recall, all four singles had shorter 45 versions so
that would be the ideal place to gather them up.

There were three singles issued in the U.S.

I noticed you are currently in Ireland; were there 4
singles released on 'Innervisions' over there?
