Amazingly, the most recent #1 hit, "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga, was actually released here in the U.S. as a CD single. I ran across one at Target tonight. It doesn't appear to be a Target exclusive, though -- they're selling it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Born-This-Way-Lady-Gaga/dp/B004N62KTG/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1300685796&sr=1-2 - http://www.amazon.com/Born-This-Way-Lady-Gaga/dp/B004N62KTG/ ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1300685796&sr=1-2

All the tracks appear to be lossless when looking at them under spectral view, with the exception of track 3, which looks like elements of the song may have been taken from lossy sources, though not the whole thing.

Tracklisting with actual times is:

1. Undescribed version matching iTunes single - 4:20
2. LA Riots Remix - 6:31
3. Chew Fu Born To Fix Remix - 5:52
4. White Shadow Remix - 4:23

Yes, that CD single is a "wide release". There still are a few commercial CD singles released every year. Most are either Wal-Mart or Target exclusives (and most stores only stock a few copies). However, Lady Gaga is one artist who consistantly has a "wide release".

Interestingly, it's reported that the commercial CD single release of "Born This Way" sold 24,000 copies this past week and this added sales boost at retail made all the difference at keeping the song at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a sixth consecutive week!

While reviewing the cd "Now That's What I Call Music 20th Anniversary Volume 1" today I came across an interesting edit of Born This Way that runs (3:39). Anyone know where this edit originated previously?

iTunes lists “The Brit Awards With MasterCard 2012” and that has the
track with a runtime of 03:41 (which is close enough in terms of edits
for silence etc). It could be from there.

Thanks for letting us know about it. I would guess that its an official radio edit but will add it to my collection anyways since its on an official release. I have not heard it but it wouldn't surprise me in the 2010's that some edits have not made their way to CD at all and some will in the future....

Just looked for every U.S. release of the song at Discogs
and no mention of a radio edit. Is this a custom edit?
