The database shows a couple of CD entries with this song fading :16 early. I don't have it but I've seen a DJ copy with the label "Special Edited Version". Does anybody have it, and does it fade :16 early?

my commercial 45 of the dave and ansil collins song "double barrel" issued as big tree 115 states a run time of 2:44 but actually runs 2:47 and is in mono.....it matches, identically, the version from the cd below

(M) (2:47) Rhino 70785 Soul Hits Of The 70's Vol 5

My http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/DaveAnsilCollins-DoubleBarrelDJ.jpg - DJ 45 is the same as the stock copy, save for the "promotional not for sale" printing.

I found an online dealer http://www.discogs.com/Dave-And-Ansil-Collins-Double-Barrel/release/1969008 - listing a "special edited version" DJ 45 that states:
A - "Double Barrel" (2:44)
B - "Double Barrel (Instrumental)" (2:34)

The instrumental B-side stated time on my DJ 45 is the same as the A-side (2:44), not (2:34). This (2:34) B-side is likely not the instrumental as stated by this dealer, who goes on to add this deadwax info:

a) BT 115A   b) BT 115A DJ "Sterling" mastering stamp.

The dealer includes these pertinent details:

"'Promotional Copy Not For Sale', B-side label states 'Special Edited Version.'"

"...Long mix w/intro, radio edit flipside..."

Assuming that the B-side is not actually the instrumental, but that the rest of the provided info is correct, it would appear that the spoken intro was edited off. That, of course, would beg the question as to where, exactly, the song begins: with the drum beats that have the spoken intro's heavily-reverbed last word still audible, or where the bass kicks in. And I, for one, am not about to shell out $45 to find out. :)

That would also put the timing close to that stated (2:34) on the edited side.

I have the "special edited version" on the flip side of my promo 45 and it does edit out the spoken intro and starts where the bass kicks in. The two existing short versions listed n the database are simply early fades of the 45.

There must have been two different commercial 45 pressings of "Double Barrel" because Jim reports his copy has an actual run time of 2:43 (the printed label time is 2:44).

There may be, I have two different stock 45 pressings from different plants. I'll see if I can dig them out once I get over this infection I am fighting off..

If the version on the Rhino collection is mono, then my 45 which is also mono sounds ten times better. There's reverb in his voice and the sound is much fuller.
Kent I hope you feel better.

Both of my 45 pressings have the same content.

None of the listings in the database are labeled 45
version. Instead they are all either LP version or an
early fade. Also, Ed above says his 45 matches the Rhino
Soul Hits Of The 70's disc. So is the 45 version truly not
on CD yet?

Don't think the US 45 RPM version is on CD yet.

i do stand corrected on this one...my commercial 45 does
indeed run 2:44 and if you fade the soul hits of the 70's
cd version from 2:38 to 2:44 you can effectively re-create
the vinyl 45 version....i disagree that the version is
different.....the re-verb and bass guitar sound spot on to
me....

Ed:
I think you have a typo when you wrote "my commercial 45 does indeed run 3:44."

I bump this up. My UK45 runs 2:44 and sounds like the soul hits of the 70's CD to my ears (fades with 'tender and soul sound' I think). Is there a spot where you can pinpoint the difference between the LP Version and the US 45 version?

The 45 has reverb on the vocals while the LP is dry.

Yes, the 45 has reverb on the vocals and the LP is dry.
Also, the 45 has dynamics compression the LP lacks, and
sounds tighter and more rocking.
