TM Century issued a "No Rap" version of "Black Or White" back in the day. Does this actually exist on promo CD? It just switches over to the instrumental during the rap part, so it's plausible that they created this one on their own using the readily available instrumental.

By contrast, I'm still convinced that an official Boyz II Men "Motownphilly" CD exists containing the "Single Edit Without Rap." (TM issued this track, too, but I've never seen an official promo.) There is no way to create this version using any of the mixes from the CD maxi or promo CD singles. There is a chance that one of the German import singles has this mix (labeled as 7" Main), as the 3:20 run time is very close. (A different German CD single has the 7" Main listed as 3:52.)

"Black or White" was never issued on an official promo without the rap, to my knowledge.

Aaron, I believe your "custom TM Century version" is indeed what happened here. The only CD single we were sent in 1991 was the commercial CD single (34K 74100). However, although the digi-pak does have a block designed to accomodate UPC info, this area is free of actual UPC info on my disc, and instead includes a "Promotional Use Only - Not For Sale" sticker over this area. This did occur from time to time back in the day, and the lack of UPC data led me to believe that Epic had originally intended to service radio for "Black And White" in this manner.

1-Black And White (non-described version) (L 3:22; A 3:20)
2-Black And White (Instrumental) L 3:22; A 3:20)

I have also just pulled two different "Motownphilly" promo CD singles, which you also included in your query here, and I will shortly be posting all those details in its own separate thread.

I heard a couple of custom edits in the day. One station just spliced the rap part by deleting the section with the rap. The other station, Q-102 in Buffalo took out two parts by taking the keyboard/drum machine transition (originally between the hard guitars and the rap) and placing it between the second-to-last chorus instance and the last refrain. Hard to explain without the original times. I don't think this was Hit Disc or a promo - it sounded custom to me.

I used my 12" which has the single version and simulated that edit as it was played then. I sent it to Aaron via email...lol. (poor Aaron seems like the go to guy)

I haven't checked my email yet this morning, Jody, but I'm always glad to hear a unique radio station edit. As you can tell, I've been reviewing some early '90s R&B hits. Not a lot of info has been posted on many of these songs, and some of them have missing/incomplete info in the database.

A good friend of mine from TM Studios has been doing some detective work on a handful of these hard-to-find promo versions. Although I don't have a catalog number or disc title (yet), he says that the "no rap" version comes from a record label promo sampler. I'll post more details if I find out more.

Sounds interesting. I'd love to hear that one.

It's easy to create if you have the instrumental. At the place where the rap starts, just splice in that piece of the instrumental.

Oh, right. I didn't pay attention earlier. I'll make it myself. :-P

Just heard the no rap version on the radio. Didn't realize there was one. Back
in the day our radio station played the rap version.

Aaron...did you ever find out what sampler the no rap version is available on?
Like to get me a copy of it.

Like Ron S, I am also looking for this. Is there a way to recreate it through the CD single instrumental by just editing out the rap and inserting a particular time set from the instrumental or is it unique to that edit?

I was never able to confirm which promo sampler it supposedly
appeared on. It's possible their internal database of source material
was incorrect and that it's an in-house TM edit. In any case, the edit
couldn't be any simpler. Just take the exact instrumental portion where
the rap appears and splice it into the vocal version.

You haven't done this for your own collection yet?

I would almost bet you "You're Only Human" is a custom
edit from TM.

The only thing I can add is that when the song came out, I needed to play it without the rap and couldn't find a copy
that existed, so I just made the edit myself. I'm not aware of a promo with the rap edited out, but at the time,
various trade magazines would release edits not made by the labels but made by Program Directors or Production
Directors. So it may have existed on one of those promo CDs, like Hitmakers. The labels looked the other way
especially when they couldn't get an act to allow an edit. TM Century could have gotten an edit from such a release or
just made one themselves because there was demand for a "no rap" version at radio. Or, there was a label edit that I just
never got from Epic.

There are actually 2 different copies of it. The 45 runtime is 4:21 and one
version of TM runs 4:14 and other TM CD it runs 4:28

Regarding the Billy Joel song, from memory, the TM edit, while close,
does not exactly match the US
7" single. They did many edits back in the day that were approximately
like the 45 but didn't exactly match.

Which TM Century disc has the "No Rap" version? I have "Black Or White" on TM Century disc 4023, and it's the version with the rap.

Thanks for that information. I guess now it's just a matter of waiting for either one to be available on eBay.
