Thought I'd paste the Warner Bros. press release for Madonna's upcoming compilation "Celebration".
There might be some previously commercially or completely unavailable 45 versions on CD, we'll see.
July 23, 2009 - For Immediate Release (Burbank, California) - Madonna, who has racked up a record 37 top 10 hits as well as seven No. 1 albums (including her last four) on the Billboard Pop Charts, has given her fans yet another opportunity to “celebrate” her musical achievements. Today, Warner Bros. Records officially confirmed the September 28th release in the U.S. (September 29 outside U.S.) of “CELEBRATION” – the ultimate compilation of Madonna songs. The songs on “Celebration” have all been remastered and selected by Madonna and her fans. They cover the expanse of the Material Girl’s extraordinary career of hits including “Everybody,” “Express Yourself,” “Vogue” and “4 Minutes.” “Celebration” will be available in a two-CD set as well as a single CD. There will also be a “Celebration” DVD released simultaneously which includes the video visionary’s best videos including several that have never before been available on DVD.
“Celebration,” the CD will also include two new songs that were recently recorded in New York City. The first single, also titled, “Celebration,” co-produced by Madonna and Paul Oakenfold, will be released August 3rd. A video for the single, which will be included on the “Celebration” DVD was just filmed in Milan, Italy and was directed by long time Madonna collaborator Jonas (“Ray of Light”) Akerlund. Several dance club remixes of “Celebration” are already headed to the clubs. The song will also be available on CD and vinyl maxi. Radio will receive the “Celebration” single on August 3rd.
The cover for “Celebration” was created by street pop artist “Mr. Brainwash” who is best known for “throwing modern cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven.”
Madonna, a multi Grammy award winning singer, writer and producer has had over 12 No. 1 singles and has a record-smashing 39 No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs Chart – by far the most of any artist in the over 30 year history of the list.

The leadoff single, "Celebration," was rush-released to Amazon this evening after it leaked on the Perez Hilton website this morning.
It's just fair. It's certainly no "4 Minutes." It sounds like something from her first album, with fun, kind of dopey lyrics, but no worse than "Hung Up," I don't suppose. I'm sure it'll make the top 40, since no advance single from a Madonna album has ever failed to do so.
Anyway, the official 45 version is labeled "Album Version," running an actual 3:34.

It sure would be great if "Borderline" is the 45 version, which has only been released on CD on the expensive Japanese singles box. I have a CDR of this version (thanks to someone on this board) but I'd buy this 2-CD set just to have this on an original CD.
Too bad they left off "True Blue", though.

So these won't be those awful Q-Sound Versions on the Immaculate Collection will they? I hope that Vogue, Borderline, and Cherish are the single versions.
Does anyone know if there is going to be a vinyl release?
If the do right this time, they should've called it "The Immaculate Correction!" LOL - OK very bad.

Previews for each track are available on the Amazon France website and another European online retailer called CeDe (the compilation is released tomorrow in Europe).
From what I heard, here are the insufferable Immaculate Collection remixes which make their way again: "Vogue", "Like a Virgin", "Open your Heart", "Borderline", "Lucky Star", and "Crazy for You".
The previews for "Express Yourself" sound like the remix/edit but with a shorter running time. An early owner of the compilation confirms it clocks in at 4:00 and has the intro used in the videos and "Local Mix", so it looks like we get a "Celebration" specific new mix.
For "Cherish", the preview does not play the IC remix, and lists track time as 3:50 (which matches the running time of IC version closer than the original 7" version). So this may be another new mix/fade.
Same with "Everybody". It sounds like the original version and listed as 4:10 which does not match the original edit running time of 3:58.
"Into The Groove" is the original version.
The rest of the previews sound like the album or edit versions, and closely match their running times.
Looks like no original 45 versions make their CD debut on this compilation.
You can also hear a preview of the second new song "Revolver".
Here's a track by track description from the Amazon clips and running times as reference:

1. Hung Up (album version)
2. Music (album version)
3. Vogue (IC remix)

8. Into The Groove (original version)
9. Like A Prayer (album version)
10. Ray Of Light (edit)
11. Sorry (edit)
12. Express Yourself (new edit/mix)
13. Open Your Heart (IC remix)
14. Borderline (IC remix)
15. Secret (edit)
16. Erotica (edit)
17. Justify My Love (album version)
18. Revolver
Disc: 2
1. Dress You Up (album version)
2. Material Girl (album version)
3. La Isla Bonita (album version)
4. Papa Don't Preach (album version)

I was about to post this myself. Yes, it's sad. But it is the album debut of the original version of "Into the Groove" and also the CD debut of the "unmixed" album-length version of "Hung Up." (Which I already had in lossless, thanks to MusicGiants.)

Well, if the mastering is decent then it would be nice to get a good sounding version of the original "Into The Groove" on CD. But the rest of the collection is an utter disappointment.
I wonder if anyone at the label is even aware that the 45 version of "Borderline" is a unique mix? It's so frustrating that this superior version is continually ignored when the song is reissued on CD, outside of the ultra-rare Japanese box.

Yes, it was available on a CD single. That single may have been an import, though; I can't recall. In any event, the sound quality was mediocre at best, sounding like it was from a higher generation source. I did a high quality needledrop from the 12" single for this song.
Also, "Into The Groove" was included on the old West German CD of "Like A Virgin".

Before its inclusing in "Celebration", the original version of "Into The Groove" was released on several import CD sources and one in the US:
*Into The Groove/Who's That Girl/Causing A Commotion 3" german CD single (921 141-2)
*Into The Groove/Who's That Girl/Causing A Commotion 5" german CD single (7599211412)
reissue of the above in 5" format
*Like A Virgin post 1989 reissue german CD album (7599-25181-2)
*Backtrax series USA CD single (2-539)
*Material Girl, Angel and Into The Groove Japan EP (WPCP-5063)
*Into The Groove german CD single (7599 2035-2)
1995 reissue of original german 12" single
*Angel german CD single (7599 20335-2)
1995 reissue of original german 12" single
*CD Single Collection (WPDR-3100-3139) Japan box set
There are mastering and quality differences among these. Some fade out a few seconds earlier, I remember we discussed this in older threads. The Japan sources are the best in my opinion.

<Borderline (IC remix) >
What a shame. I have the actual single mix on CDR (from the Japanese $300 CD singles box set - due to person in this chatboard), but I would have paid for this double CD, just to have this right mix on an original CD. But Warner Bros loses more sales, because they just don't take a few minutes to get it right.
Due to time constrictions, I didn't think the 6-minute album version of Borderline would be included here, and those IC remixes were blasted all over the press and internet (I think) - so I really thought there was a good shot at getting this song - and others - in their proper single versions here. The majors mess it up again.

I just gave the 2 CD version a scan and here's the version playlist according to what I hear.
Disc: 1
1. Hung Up (unmixed album version, first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CD-101648)
2. Music (album version)
3. Vogue (Immaculate Collection remix)
4. 4 Minutes (edit)(first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CDR-446652)
5. Holiday (album version)
6. Everybody (a new version that uses the extended version as the original 45 as source, but the edit points are different)
7. Like A Virgin (Immaculate Collection remix)
8. Into The Groove (original version with full outro)
9. Like A Prayer (album version)
10. Ray Of Light (edit)
11. Sorry (edit)
12. Express Yourself (a new version that uses the local mix and remix/edit as sources. the editing structure is brandnew, a different one was used for the Immaculate Collection remix. without disrespect, as with "Everybody", you can recreate better edits at home).
13. Open Your Heart (Immaculate Collection remix)
14. Borderline (Immaculate Collection remix)
15. Secret (edit)
16. Erotica (edit, or that was the idea. At one of the original 45's edit points, at 3:29 approx, they missed it and it sounds as the CD skips. Maybe this is a problem with only the European mastering. Many users have reported it so it's not a problem with just one copy) INCREDIBLE...
17. Justify My Love (album version)
18. Revolver
Disc: 2
1. Dress You Up (album version but for apparently no reason they cut the first four snare drums to only one, and it has some special effect added. huh?)
2. Material Girl (album version)
3. La Isla Bonita (album version)
4. Papa Don't Preach (album version)
5. Lucky Star (Immaculate Collection remix)
6. Burning Up (3:41 album version)
7. Crazy For You (Immaculate Collection remix)
8. Who's That Girl (album version)
9. Frozen (album version)
10. Miles Away (edit)
11. Take A Bow (album version)
12. Live To Tell (album version)
13. Beautiful Stranger (album version)
14. Hollywood (album version)
15. Die Another Day (album version)
16. Don't Tell Me (edit, first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CD-100510)
17. Cherish (new mix that as far as I can tell simply edits the album version using the Immaculate Collection remix edit points and fade out)
18. Celebration (original version)
Obviously there is no criteria followed to chose the versions, sounds more like random and let's use whatever master is closer at hand.
Some owners of the 1 disc version are reporting a new edit of "Frozen" as opposed to this set which uses the album version. Talk about random.
There is a front sticker that says "digitally remastered from the original tapes!". Right.
Many tracks suffer from loudness excess but most everything does these days.
Nice work, thanks : P

Wow, that sounds like a very sloppily assembled compilation. Pretty surprising for such a big name act. Makes you wonder what's going on at the label for such shoddy product to be released on one of their biggest names.
I'll be giving this one a wide berth.

Production credit errors from the booklet...
The production of "La Isla Bonita" is credited to Madonna, William Orbit, and Patrick Leonard
(the song was produced by her and Leonard. William Orbit would first collaborate with Madonna in l990 for a "Justify My Love" remix).
No production credits for "Papa don't Preach" listed. After the song's writer and publisher credit paragraph, instead of production credits, they listed writer and publisher again (it was produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray).
"Die Another Day" production is credited to Madonna & William Orbit. The track was actually produced by her and Mirwais Ahmadzaï.

I haven't listened to each song in its entirety and don't plan to for now, but I read on a forum someone mentioning the "Frozen" "Celebration" version was extended, so was curious.
As a matter of fact he's right, there is an extra compass at the end of the song after she says "your heart..." and before the melody structure changes.
It's hard to explain without the sound, but in the "Ray of Light" version there are two compasses between those sections, and there is a synth sound that fades a little too quickly from one compass to the other.
In the "Celebration" mix, there are three compasses, and the synth sound fades out smoothly in the second compass into the third one. The second one is missing on the album version, as though the "Celebration" one were the original and the other one edited from it.
Whether this was random, go figure, but interesting.
If anybody would like to hear it, I created an mp3 mixing both parts from the same start point, and they go out of synch about 12 seconds after.

This was posted over at the SH forums.
"Pretty damning stuff from the legendary Madonnaphile
"Mattress" on MadonnaNation (I think the cussing is
censored automatically here, sorry - but the content is
really helpful)"
CELEBRATION: A RETARDATION.
So, Mr. Brainwash gives us brilliant artwork which
coincides with an equally stunning promotional campaign,
so of course Warner Bros. botches the audio portion. I'm
particularly sensitive to this right now given the
quality, care and accuracy that went into the recently
re-released Beatles catalog.
26 years in, is no one going to step up to preserve
Madonna's recorded legacy?
Lest the tone of this come across as entirely negative
(it's really more underwhelmed than anything), this is to
serve as final confirmation of what you're getting when
you buy the new collection. All of the truly iconic songs
are here, though many major hits have been omitted. And
that's okay considering --impressively-- it would require
double the amount of discs to include all of Madonna's
hits in one package.
Here is what is included on Celebration.
There are 15 previously released songs featured in their
full-length, original album versions.
BURNING UP
HOLIDAY
MATERIAL GIRL
INTO THE GROOVE
LIVE TO TELL
PAPA DON'T PREACH
LA ISLA BONITA
WHO'S THAT GIRL
LIKE A PRAYER
JUSTIFY MY LOVE
TAKE A BOW
BEAUTIFUL STRANGER
MUSIC - MASTERING ERROR: multiple digital pops and clicks
that are not part of the original recording can be heard
throughout this song.
DIE ANOTHER DAY - MASTERING ERROR: Track fades up late
due to the incorrectly placed track index on the American
Life album. This is ridiculous. The unaffected album
version appears on both the US Promo CD single and the
Die Another Day film soundtrack, all Warner Bros.
releases.
HOLLYWOOD - MASTERING ERROR: Track starts abruptly and
end of "American Life"'s fade out is audible.
Of these, nine were released as singles in versions that
differ from these LP mixes. I would have much preferred
the inclusion of the difficult to obtain single mixes,
but I'm in therapy and have mostly moved on. Mostly.
Fortunately, five tracks do appear in their official
single versions.
SECRET (Edit) - though this looks to be the album version
with the single fade recreated for this compilation
RAY OF LIGHT (Edit) - again, it's more than likely that
this is actually the album version reedited for this
compilation to match the radio edit
SORRY (Single Edit) - the correct single version master
4 MINUTES (Edit) - the correct single version master
MILES AWAY (Radio Edit) - the correct single version
master
...and one more is a rarity from a US promo CD:
HUNG UP ([Unblended] Album Version)
Next up, there are five remixes lifted directly from The
Immaculate Collection.
BORDERLINE (1990) (Q Sound Mix)
LIKE A VIRGIN (1990) (Q Sound Mix)
CRAZY FOR YOU (1990) (Q Sound Mix)
OPEN YOUR HEART (1990) (Q Sound Mix)
VOGUE (1990) (Q Sound Mix)
And now we pause to ask ourselves why.
The remaining ten tracks are unique to the collection.
The first two are new recordings.
CELEBRATION
REVOLVER
One appears to be a from-the-vault rarity, likely
included by mistake.
LUCKY STAR - ALTERNATIVE Q SOUND MIX
Virtually identical to the version heard on The
Immaculate Collection, though there is noticeably more
reverb on the "ee-yeah"'s at the foot of each chorus. The
music leading into the first verse is different (on TIC
is was edited to match the original 7" version, on here
it is not.) The most obvious difference is right at the
fade, instead of the chorus it edits to a set of adlibs
heard on longer versions of the song, but not heard on
the Q Sound version. Odd, but inoffensive as it seems to
be a genuine unreleased variation.
FROZEN - The full length album version with a short pass
of additional strings during the end that extend the song
by approx. 5 seconds.
As for the rest, quality control has reached an all time
low:
EVERYBODY - FAKE EDIT
This uses the full length, original 12" version as its
starting point (as did the official 7" single version),
but is structured differently. While the overall idea for
this edit wasn't horrendous, whoever was placed in charge
of actually executing the edits needs to be tortured.
Slowly... painfully.
DRESS YOU UP - FUCKED UP INTRO
What the hell happened here? This isn't a mix variation
so much as a mastering error... the album version started
late with severe tape pinch/phasing issues right at the
top. Of the four beats on the intro, all but the fourth
are missing.
EXPRESS YOURSELF - FAKE FUCKING FUCK.
The most offensive. In a failed attempt to kindofsortof
recreate the video version, they have taken the complete
intro straight off of the Local Mix, "zipper" included.
The actual, official video version starts at the
percussion and is specially mixed to have echo on the
line "Do you believe in love..." which is dry on the
Local Mix and therefore not present here. This new
monstrosity then incorrectly cuts to the 7" Remix/Edit
version and then again where they have BUTCHERED the song
right at the bridge. A bad edit jumps the track from the
end of the chorus to the repeat of the bridge which kills
the structure of the track. This version is unlistenable.
CHERISH - FAKE EDIT
The original album version cut to the length of the
super-short Immaculate Collection version. AMATEUR
doesn't begin to describe how bad these edits have been
executed. Poor edits result in creating entirely new
lyrics! How about this chestnut... "Can't get away, I
won't let to" ?! They render all prior complaints about
bad edits on Madonna's releases void. Again,
unlistenable. In the cases of "Express Yourself" and
"Cherish," why not just use the fucking Q Sound remixes?!
They're the exact same length as the fake edits and it's
not like there aren't 6 others from that release present
here.
EROTICA - FAKE Radio Edit
The edit points are around the same places as the
OFFICIAL radio edit, but are poorly executed. The worst
is around 3:30... they cut a beat late making for one of
the sloppiest moments on this royalfuckupofacompilation.
I don't understand why this needed to be recreated as the
official edit appears on countless singles and 2001's
GHV2 compilation. Oh. And the "surface noise" on the end
of "Erotica" overlaps the beginning of "Justify My Love".
DON'T TELL ME - FAKE Radio Edit
The least offensive/noticeable fake edit, but incorrect
nonetheless. The true radio edit was a unique mix for the
very last second that does not feature the "whimsical
strings" tag. For Celebration, they have chopped off the
end, but the first millisecond of this tag is audible.
Regarding the mastering: It sounds as though noise
reduction was used to remove "tape hiss" which is
unnecessary on most recordings post 1980. This process
kills part of the high end of recordings. In addition,
the entire album has a smear of bass over it. I really
wanted to like it, but it sounds like a cheap "bass
boost" EQ effect was applied to the songs, not proper
remastering.
I had accepted the slightly shoddy sequencing, several
major omissions and overall lack of consistency and
attention to detail with the mixes chosen for this
release. I love the look of the entire project, but I
cannot understand the use of newly created, butchered
versions of songs. |
(EDIT - found a slightly updated version. Sorry the
language was restored.)

million dollars to promote this?

I was just listening to "Lucky Star" on the new compilation and realized it's a different mix from "Immaculate Collection".
The original "IC" version uses the same edit points as the 1984 45 version, which enables all incoming synth sounds to be present by the time she starts singing.
This "Celebration" mix uses different points ignoring this, so the edit point where she starts to sing is a little abrupt if you listen carefully.
There is another difference at the very end of the track. Both mixes fade sooner than the original 45, but:
At 3:22 after the "but I'm the luckiest by far" line, in the "Immaculate Collection" mix she sings "starlight, star bright, first star I see tonight..." as does the original 45.
On the "Celebration" mix at that same point, the lyrics are "starlight, star bright, baby, starlight, star bright, stay by my side tonight...".
This doesn't seem like a random choice, or maybe it is? Say, they couldn't get a hold of the original IC master, instead a tape with IC mixes that didn't make the final cut? Whatever.

Perhaps, a silly question, but do the 45 versions still exist out there? Why couldn't the Celebration collection have used the tape masters from the Japanese CD single collection?

We can speculate many reasons, and even if say we get in touch with someone at Warner, they may not be honest or even understand what we're talking about.
One sure fact is the producer of this compilation didn't care much, and neither did she for that matter.
Even if this was the last release she owed Warner, what happened to her obsession with perfection here? Maybe she learned via Kabbalah that being a control freak isn't healthy which is true, but in this case it would have helped : P

Santi have you watched the DVD? To me and several others who have it has unacceptable compression, a pixel fest as one of the reviews called it. The previously released videos on Immaculate Collection and 93:99 have FAR better video quality. Audio on some of the videos sounds better on "Celebration" but it is another victim of loudness wars. Everything sounds close to saturation. There are many comments regarding the DVD at the Steve Hoffman forum.

I agree the DVD set is not flawless, however it's still better than the two disc CD set. I figure some of these music videos are over two decades old. They really messed up the CD set up good by including most of the incorrect or lousy versions/mixes. Better off just downloading "Into The Groove" and "Celebration" since those two may be the only tracks worth getting out of 36.

It doesn't seem Madonna cares about the music very much. Not only is this release a travesty, but she was on David Letterman a couple nights ago and she didn't even sing! She just ate pizza (and talked). I wish she'd care more about her music.

Vinny Vero, who was a marketing and A&R executive at EMI from 1990-1996 and has himself produced numerous compilations by major artists, skewers the new "Celebration" compilation in a blog post called "Celebration Frustration." He's particularly critical of the lost opportunity to issue the rare 45 versions on CD for the first time.
My favorite part:

I just had the opportunity to hear this CD. "Like A
Prayer" is not the album version. Madonna's vocals, and
the choir is mixed up loder, and the drums are more
aggressive in this mix. Most of the album cuts, like
"Dress You Up" sound like they were remixed, too.
It sounds as if several tracks were sped up, too.
To me, this set is almost as useless as the "Immaculate
Collection".

I just picked up the 1CD and the 2CD set of this. I guess I'm a little behind the times regarding Madonna and her latest releases of older material.
From what I can tell so far is that many here weren't impressed with this collection nor the "Not Enough Love" releases. Is there anything recent on CD,
that might be worth looking for like this? Or, are we waiting for the Madonna "Holy Grail" release anytime in the near future?
I'm not really a big Madonna fan, but it sure seems as though she likes to lead her fans on a bit.

Funny you should mention Madonna, AdvprosD, because I'm actually in the process right now of acquiring edits and remixes for certain songs of hers that I don't yet have in my digital music library. I don't know if you're into downloading lossless digital audio files in CD quality, but have you checked out the Qobuz website, which contains reissues of many of Madonna's maxi-CD singles remastered and released over the past year?

Spotify has all those maxi-CD singles releases too. I don’t know what all the
buzz for Qobuz. Their quality is compared to CD rips. Their profiling isn’t
nearly as good as Spotify’s. Qobuz also lacks local file support. But just my
opinion and no harm in trying it for free.

The Spotify source material is in lossy format, so all
you get is lossy quality. High quality, but lossy.
And you can't download the songs to keep them and play
them wherever you want.
Qobuz sells those songs/albums, in lossless format, and
allow you to keep them archived in your own physical
drives or whatever media storage you use.
Now, if you don't care about the lossy/lossless quality
thing, and you don't care to have the files stored in
your own physical storage... whatever, well, you
certainly don't need Qobuz (or any other service that
sells or just streams music in lossless quality).

Exactly right, cristianmdp. The very reasons you have stated is why I personally much prefer using a downloadable lossless music website service like Qobuz, rather than a lossy streaming service like Spotify. Also, bear in mind that Spotify is subject to removing songs from its site without warning whenever the licensing rights with record labels expire, which is something I absolutely detest. Meanwhile, artists can suddenly decide to remove their entire catalogs in protest, like Neil Young did when Spotify signed podcaster Joe Rogan to a $100 million deal several years ago. (Young did eventually relent a couple of years later and allowed his music to return to Spotify.) Thus, by owning permanent audio file copies of every song in full CD quality and having everything saved onto a physical hard drive unit, this enables me complete control and access over my own music library, and no one can take any of it away from me. This all explains why I have never used a streaming service like Spotify and currently have no interest in doing so (though I can understand how it may have certain appeal to others).

I will admit that it's cool that you can buy and download songs om Qobuzz. But no harm in the free trial, even if it's strictly for the Madonna songs.

I agree that was unfortunate along with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Joni Mitchell. I don't know how Spotify would tell you a certain song would be removed. It would be nice with Youtube videos I save that get removed or set to private. There are other reasons why songs disappear (or greyed out, depending on your settings). I've noticed that they can disappear, but then reappear due to a re-release. Some disappear and reappear in a week for no reason. Ever since 2017, I've kept a playlist of all the songs of the 1980's that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, that Spotify has. The ones that aren't on Spotify, you most likely won't find anywhere aside from YouTube.I can't find any of Peter Wolf's early solo efforts or some artists' songs from movies: "Hole In My Heart" Cyndi Lauper, "Twistin' the Night Away" Rod Stewart. Even all of Toni Basil's songs are re-recorded. Regardless, I can add the missing songs to local files. I will say that streaming music apps as a whole, have come a long way, especially in the increase of songs available on them.

When a song is removed from Spotify or Pandora, usually it's grayed out, compared to the other songs. I guess this must be the default setting for both platforms, as I don't recall doing anything to set them to gray. I guess you're saying for some people, the song just completely disappears.
I've been listening to Pandora a lot lately, making playlists and radio stations. While I'm enjoying it very much, it's frustrating that some songs and albums are "Radio Only" - they can't be added to playlists, and it's extremely hard to hear them. As far as I can gather, these are albums that used to be readily available digitally but have since been removed (for the most part) on, for instance, Spotify. Maybe Pandora moves them to "Radio Only" instead of disappearing them completely.
I do know what you mean about "albums disappearing and reappearing in a week". Gary US Bonds' 1st 2 '80s albums were "Radio Only" when I started getting into Pandora again. Then just a couple weeks later, both albums were available as regular albums you could hear.
If anyone else has theories as to why some albums are "radio only", I'd like to hear them.
And one last thing, when looking at a Greatest Hits (or even a regular album), if it contains a song from a movie, it's often grayed out as completely unavailable (not even "radio only"), and I'm sure this is due to the contractual agreements made between the movie companies and record companies. Sadly, digital platforms weren't around when many '70s and '80s albums came out on CD.
