I realize Rush didn't have many top 40 hits (OK, they had one), but I was curious. Anyone know if the 45 is indeed an edit of the LP, or are they one and the same? And if it is an edit, can it be easily extracted from the LP version?

I believe that the 45-rpm disc can be edited from the LP version. Do you have an email addy? I have a version I have edited from the album, and I really think I'm very close. I can send it to you.
I think it would be cool to find out just how close I was.

My stock copy of Spirit of Radio lists a time of 3:00 (2:58 actual). The intro is trimmed from :41 to :17, and fades out well before the "for the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall" lyric.

Ordered a 45 for this on Friday night. Within the week, I should have some details.
It's possible what I ordered may be different from Chuck's 45. Mine is a Canadian copy I ordered.
Here's a link to the label: http://i20.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/16/e8/a183_1.JPG - Rush - Spirit Of Radio
Label time is listed as 3:40.

My own edit has to be close then. It also times out to 3:40. Doug will be able to confirm that. Though I'm interested in finding out where the differences lie.

After listening to the edit Jody made and the jukebox single Chuck provided, at first I wondered if the differences lie in "promo vs. stock." But John may be on to something--it could very well be a case of a U.S. 45 vs. a Canadian 45 (U.S. 45 being shorter, Canadian 45 being longer).
From what I can tell, both versions edit the intro, but Chuck's 45 fades way earlier. I don't have A/Bing software to say definitively, though.

Turns out the seller sent me the U.S. stock 45, which is really what I wanted in the first place. The image in his ad matched the Canadian 45.
Listed time is 3:00, actual is 2:57.5.
Deadwax is 2-55872. Initially, there was a 2-54 but it looks scratched out.

Actually in Canada, Rush was on the Anthem label, and if it's 3:40 in length, there's a good chance I've got to be close with my edit. I saw a video on YouTube where someone plays the Mercury US single. The first edit is there, but the track fades on a portion that I know for fact is not on the Canadian single edit (stock or promo).
The Canadian edit gives a much better feel of the whole song. I don't feel robbed of anything when I hear. That US single is a complete disservice to Rush.

Anybody know if the 2:57 - 2:58 U.S. single version ever made it to CD? I didn't see this one in the database; I assume it never even made it to #40 on the Hot 100.

I was able to recreate the 2:57 edit from the Permanent
Waves album but didn't save any notes. Message me your
email and I'll send you an mp3 with my recreation.

You're correct--it peaked at #51.

I guess no one ever found the true 3:40 edit on Anthem Records did they? The last time I genuinely heard it was on a Tilsonburg, Ontario AM station in 1992. At that time, I hadn't heard it in a decade.
And I've never heard it since.

The copy I have of the "single"has a 14 second intro and
the song has a cold ending guitarwise and times at 3:01.
Since I do not remember the single, this might be the
45, but not sure.
Also have version that times at 3:40 which must be the
Canadian edit.
You got me!

I guess I was hoping that someone on YouTube uploaded the Anthem Records pressing, but no dice. All that's there is the American three minute version. Oh well.
