I have to ask why Hip-O Select titles are not included in the database? All those wonderful single and promo versions of James Brown and Motown artists (many of which are available nowhere else) but they aren't listed.
Not trying to cause a ruckus I'm just curious because I've seen Rhinohandmade titles.

I've wondered that, too. Pat has said he doesn't like to include limited edition things that aren't available in stores, but he has made exceptions before. He did add the recent Paul Anka CDs from the thread I started.
I personally would like to see them in the database, but it's Pat's call.

I would think that the change in the CD market could allow for these so-called limited run CDs, which, seem to still be out there for years.

Another point to be made is that you can buy the Motown Box Sets (or even individual tracks) on iTunes. So, it's not like they're unavailable to the general public.

I thought that I had discussed this very subject previously in another thread but let me restate my position regarding Hip-O Select. While the quality of their product is excellent, they do not discount their cd's and they do not send out reviewer copies (at least to me). So let's look at just the latest installment of "The Complete Motown Singles Volume 10 - 1970" which is a 6 cd set selling for $120 + $12 shipping. That works out to be $22 per disc which in my opinion is a huge rip off. For all 10 volumes the cost would be $1,320 and to purchase the entire Hip-O Select catalog would probably cost me $5,000.
In the case of Rhino Hand Made, they do offer me reviewer copies of most of their catalog and that is why they are included in the database.

Thanks for the answer Pat,
Maybe we could start an email campaign to get review copies sent to you. I know I have purchased many CDs based strictly on info contained in your database or relayed on this message board from knowledgeable members.

Another thought, too, Pat: It's understandable that you wouldn't want to spend $1320 for a CD series, so if there are people on this board who have these CDs and whom you trust give reliable info as to the length of the song, etc., then these people can supply you the info for the database.

That thought has crossed my mind before, too, Pat -- the possibility of your having occasional "guest reviewers."

Sure, I have no objection to including the Complete Motown Singles series in the database if anyone wishes to pass along the relevant information!

Since I have all but Vol. 1, I'll volunteer. But give me a couple weeks. I'll probably send it to you year by year, Pat.
The caveat is: I don't have most of the original 45s to compare them to. All I can do is assume they are all the 45 versions, with the two or three mistakes that I've read about on other bulletin boards like the Steve Hoffman forums.

I already have a volunteer working on Volume 1 so that should fit well with your plan Brian!

Pat, I already own just about every Top 40 hit on the Motown family of labels from the era in question on a commercial 45, as well as also owning all 10 volumes of the Motown Singles Box so far, and I would also be more than willing to help you. This same statement is also true for the five 2-CD chronological, comprehensive James Brown sets released so far on Hip-O Select. But since you have at least two other volunteers already, just let me know where you'd like me to start, so we can avoid duplication of effort.

Well, Jim, I'm starting with Vol. 10 and working back, so maybe you could start with Vol. 2 and work forward...

Thanks, Jim. I've already submitted 1968 and 1969 to Pat and will probably begin work on 1967 tomorrow.
Now that I hit upon the idea of using Whitburn's "Pop Annual" to type out all the Motown and associated labels' top 40 hits for each year, instead of looking up every single song in the database to see if it's listed, it actually only takes about an hour per set.
