My commercial 45, which is mono and confirmed as Mercury 72639, with
machine-stamped deadwax info of "YW 39073 6", has a listed time of (2:45),
but an actual time of (3:06).
My promo 45, also confirmed as Mercury 72639, with machine-stamped
deadwax info of "YW 39073 1", also has a listed time of (2:45), but has an
actual time :04 seconds shorter than my stock 45 copy above does, at (3:02).

tonight i'm a/b'ing keith's 45's versus the cd "ain't
gonna lie", all his 45's are in mono and the tracks on
this import cd are all in stereo.....BUT, i also have the
cd below
(S) (3:05) &nb sp; Polygram Special Markets 314520272 One
Hit Wonders
and discovered that the track "98.6" on this cd is in
mono NOT stereo as the db indicates......pat, can you
please confirm that your copy of this cd contains a mono
version and not a stereo version.....the 45 and this mono
cd version both run 3:05....

Wonder if the mono LP of Keith really was? Mercury then was testing the waters for single inventory Stereo. Many a mono jacket had a Stereo LP or mono on one side and Stereo on the other. Really confusing for record collectors.

No true mono on this title; it was in true stereo. My mono copy shows "Mercury Hi-Fidelity MG 21102" at the bottom right on the front cover and a typical "SR 61102/MG 21102" in the upper right corner of the back cover shared by both stereo and mono jackets.
The http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/Keith-98.jpg - labels on both sides state "Monaural MG-21102, but I knew as soon as I pulled the record from the inner sleeve that both sides were actually stereo. Note the highlighted portion of the matrix number in the lower right corner, showing the "2/61102" shared stamper designation.
I wonder if Mercury ever caught any flack for charging stereo copy customers a premium price for what essentially amounted to the words "stereo" on the front cover and labels?

Those 2/6 deadwax copies are the notorious experimental single inventory Stereo items. I would love to know about what flack if any Mercury caught over the extra cost Stereo deception. Period issues of Billboard on Google Books might shed some light on this issue.

What about promo copies? Some labels issued mono promos as late as 1970, when all stock copies were stereo.
Anyone have one?
I doubt anyone would complain if they got stereo for the price of mono...I sure didn't!
