Pat:

The database currently has the following comment for Ozzy Osbourne's "Mama, I'm Coming Home":

(dj copies of this 45 ran (3:23); commercial copies were all (3:18))

I was at a record convention this past weekend and picked up a commercial CD single for the song on Epic 74265. On this single, "Mama, I'm Coming Home" runs 4:11 and is identical to the LP version. Therefore, it looks like the database comment will need to be modified to reflect the fact that commercial copies run 3:18 and 4:11.

Can either the 3:23 or 3:18 edits be recreated from the LP version?

One thing I forgot to ask... Are the commercial single copies that run 3:18 reflective of just the cassette single and/or the vinyl 45 (if one was available... sorry, I don't have access to my Whitburn Top Pop Singles book at the moment to check)? If so, then this would appear to be a case where the run times differ depending on the commercial single medium.

Jim sent me the 4:11 LP version, and I have an edit that runs 3:22 on Spotlight On Hits Vol. 5. (Not sure which edit that would be, but the last strum takes place at 3:13 and holds until dead silence around 3:22...)

Here are instructions for creating my Spotlight On Hits edit; timing based on Jim's mp3, where the first strum is at 0.3 seconds:

Keep 0:00.0-0:01.6 of the LP version.
Edit on the first bass note.
Remove the 8 beats from 0:01.6-0:08.6.
Keep just less than 24 beats, from 0:08.6-0:20.7. Edit should be right where the first word "I" in the line "I could be right" would fall, just before the downbeat.
Remove the 48 beats from 0:20.7-1:11.1. (The "I" from the last sentence is at 1:11 in the LP version.)
Keep 1:11.1-4:11.6 (end) of LP version.

Your mixdown should run 3:22.9, with edits at 0:01.6 and 0:22.3.

Thanks, Ron for the edit instructions!

Average price of a promo CD single was anywhere from 15.00 - 40.00 and up!

The 2nd edit occurs just before "Times gone by seem to be..."

Pat:

I see you've updated the database with some notes regarding "Mama I'm Coming Home". You might want to include the fact that both cassette single and commercial CD single copies run 4:11. Also, one other suggestion... Do you agree that it might be more accurate to revise all CDs with an "LP version" comment to instead read something like "LP, cassette single, and CD single version"? As always, I'm here to offer a helping hand. :-)
