My latest Whitburn Pop Annual states a run time for this song of (4:10), but my commercial copy has both a listed and actual time of (4:26). Perhaps this was issued with two different listed times, because both sides of my promo 45 DO have listed times of (4:10). However, both promo 45 sides' actual times are (4:26), same as my commercial 45.

Was there a shorter than 4:26 promo version of this
song?

Also, is there a LP Speed/45 Speed difference with this song?

For some reason, I'd thought there was a speed difference between the 45 and the LP.

Nope.

I have a vinyl dub of the 45, plus the Elektra release of The Lace, and all the compilations on which "Stay The Night" appears.

All run about 102.4 BPM throughout.

Priority's Best Of 80's Rock Vol. 4 (1994) runs 102.2 BPM, and Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 11 Sweet Freedom (2007) runs 102.3 BPM. All others are at 102.4 BPM.

All the versions of the song I've seen, on vinyl or on CD, appear to be the LP version, running at the LP speed, with the same fade points that run to the LP length.

I have what is labeled as a promo 45 version on my hard drive, but I can't confirm that this was ever released on vinyl or on CD. It's got a few edits throughout. It purports to be from a CD called Hits Of 86, but I doubt that such a CD exists.

So in other words, the 45 and the LP are the same?

Sorry, Ron, I didn’t see your e-mail about this until just now. I withdraw
the question.

The version from The Lace: does it track into the next song on the LP?

The version I have fades very low (below -60 db) but cuts off at the end of the file instead of fading to silence.

After the trimming of the silence at the beginning and the end of the file, I come up with a file that runs 4:26.888 which matches the reported 7" single length.

It's a long tail for sure, starting about 3:58.

"Stay The Night
It's alright, just stay the night
Stay the night
Let a little love show
Stay the night
Stay tonight
Stay the night
Don't say you don't know
Stay the night
You lead I'll follow
Stay the night
Let your love show..."

This is where the file cuts off, with about 205 ms between the final downbeat & the end. It doesn't make it to another "stay the night."

Thanks! I never listened to it until just now. I'm guessing that "slightly more up-tempo" version is really the album version? It irritates me when YouTubers try and pass along a song with incorrect info.

It just sounds like speed was adjusted with software to
me. Why?

I don't think these "too-fast" versions exist on vinyl.

Here's the Discogs entry that shows a white-label promo 45 with a printed time of 4:10 (not 4:26, as on the commercial 45):

https://www.discogs.com/release/12608650

And here's a YouTube video of the white-label promo 45 being played, which shows that the white-label promo 45 is the same speed and length as the commercial 45:
