Can anyone point out the specific differences between the 45 and LP version of Three Dog Night's "Family of Man", aside from the mono/stereo channel mixing? I think I may detect some added reverb on the LP version not present on the 45, but can anyone cite any other differences? I ask because I'm looking to replicate the 45 version from CD in stereo if possible, but I want to make sure I produce an accurate stereo 45.

First, Pat has it correct in the database. Many issues of this song are the stereo DJ version which is an early fade of the LP version. However, the stereo DJ runs 3:13 (vs 3:10 on the DJ label) and all CD issues I've seen of this version only run 3:08 or 3:09, so they dumped it a bit early.

Second, the mono version has differences, outside of the hotter mix on the drums and other instruments. A tape echo effect was added to the vocals. Plus some regular reverb. And there is an edit near the end of the mono 45. If you sync up the Harmony CD with any of the mono versions on CD you'll find the edit. Bascially they get to some of the stronger guitar licks quicker on the mono 45. One chorus of the fade out is edited out to get there faster.

The stereo DJ 45 never gets to some of those licks, there was no edit, so the song fades out before you get to them.

Which is why you'd have to edit from Harmony if you want to make a stereo version that matches the mono version edit.

Thank you very much, Bill, for nicely detailing the differences between the 45 and LP version of "Family of Man". So technically it is possible to edit the stereo LP version to match the mono 45, but the mixes won't be the same partly due to the added echo effect and reverb. In cases like these, I'd rather just stick with the mono 45 mix since it has unique audio not found on its stereo LP counterpart.
