CD appearances of The Cars' "Tonight She Comes" vary by as much as 11 seconds in the database, from 3:45 to 3:56. Anyone know the actual running time of the 45? Thanks.

Brian, my commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:52) and an actual time of (3:51).

I don't think "Tonight She Comes" ever appeared on a Cars vinyl LP release, so we can deduce that none of the song's other CD run times in the database can be attributed to an LP length.

Todd, "Tonight She Comes" first appeared on a vinyl LP as a new song on the group's 1985 The Cars Greatest Hits.

Sonofagun... I completely forgot about that, Paul! For some reason, I was thinking "Tonight She Comes" would have come off the group's 1984 Heartbeat City LP. So when I checked the track listing on that album and didn't see the song, I incorrectly concluded it was a 45-only release that later appeared on the Greatest Hits LP. My bad!

In light of this correction, does anyone have the run time for "Tonight She Comes" from the Greatest Hits vinyl LP?

guys....you may want to revisit this one...my commercial 45 actually runs 3:56 and has wind chimes and gongs which are very faint, but they run after the song ends for about 0:07.....if all can verify this for me i'd be appreciative....

Ed, when you make a request like this in the future, could you please provide the deadwax info for your 45 up front? That way, when we go pull/re-check earlier posted timings/provide the deadwax for the other 45 copy, we'll have full details for your copy, and then already be pretty certain in knowing if there were two different commercial 45 pressings for the song or not - thanks.

Ed, my http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh240/YahShure/Cars-TonightSheComesDJ.jpg - DJ 45 matches your description regarding the very faint chimes and gongs. Its actual time is (3.55.7). That is also the point where the trail-out groove kicks in. Close enough.

Dead wax details: Specialty (SRC) logo, STE-69589-A-2   1-1. Same song on flip (which I didn't time) is STE-69589-A-1   1-1. The letters are hand-etched, with the "TE" inscribed as a single character on both sides.

Thanks for the double-check/details, John. It is certainly possible that I missed those faint chimes at the end of the song during my earlier, 2007 timing. I didn't ever know of their existance. I never heard them at the ending on any radio station airing, and must've even overlooked it the day we added it back in 1986, as I was the "official carter" of all our current music during that time. Thanks for the new info, guys, and for the record I'll re-pull/re-check my 45 details for the record ASAP.

Jim, the credit goes to Ed for his extra-sharp ears on this one. But don't be too hard on yourself, either. While the first wind chime and gong or two are relatively easily heard, the latter two-thirds or so of the tail end are very faint. As your station's official carter, you would have to have drawn the line on this ending. I had to normalize the tail end in order to hear all of it, and when the trail-out groove kicked in, it was one of those moments when one curses for having had the cans cranked.

Your PD and fellow jocks would have formed an angry mob and had your official carter status revoked for having left in what, to their ears, would have sounded like dead air. Or worse: by the time the station's air chain finished with it, it would not have been pretty. :)

FYI... "Tonight She Comes" fades out :11 early on the 1985 - Only Rock 'N Roll - 1989 CD (JCI 3128), thus eliminating most of the faint chimes at the end.

Does anyone have the Cars Greatest Hits vinyl LP who can pass along the song's run time info? I'm curious to know if it runs 3:56 like the 45.

The actual running time of the song on the Cars Greatest Hits vinyl LP is (3:53), the listed time is "3:52" on the LP record label. (Elektra 60464-1)
So immediately, the next song starts from 3:53.45. on the Side Two of the vinyl LP. (Side Two-1. Tonight She Comes. Side Two-2. My Friend's Girl.)

Thanks for all the vinyl LP run times you've been contributing recently, Abagon. They're very helpful to me!

The database indicates (3:56) as the 45 runtime info. My commercial 45 runs (3:53), the listed time is "3:52" on the record label. My 45 is the same as the Greatest Hits vinyl LP. The matrix number etched on the runout groove is (STE-69589-A-1)

"Tonight She Comes" appears as
