I just noticed that this song as listed on the ABKCO GH CD is not the 45, but rather a another (mono) version with an alternate vocal track. The stereo version appears on "The Very Best Of Marianne Faithfull" Import CD (London). The DB should probably read "Alternate vocal track," or Not original hit version, or even "mono version of a stereo import CD version." Or something. Pat can figure that out. Anyway, I'm guessing that the mono 45 version is nowhere to be found domestically. But might it be on an import CD somewhere?

I have this in stereo running 1:47 from the CD "Very Best of Marianne Faithfull". Here's a link from allmusic.com with a stereo 30 second clip: http://wm04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jzfyxqq0ld6 e.

Robert, can you tell me if this too is the alternate take?

As far as I can tell, the ABKCO label has remastered and reissued material on CD in recent years from every major performing artist on its roster, except Marianne Faithfull. Hopefully, ABKCO will get on the ball and eventually release a badly needed remastered compilation of Marianne's singles on CD and include the correct hit version of "Summer Nights".

David, the best way to distinguish the 45 from the LP is at :45, where there is a slight delay when she sings the word "way" (as in "...always be this wwwway." On the LP the words are right on the beat. Also, the 45 runs 1:48. while the LP runs 1:46. I'd like to get my hands on "The Best of Marianne Faithfull" (1:53)(Karussell)or "The Collection" (1:48)(Spectrum Music). Does anyone have these?

Sorry, David, I didn't answer your question. Yes, it sounds like the alternate. Also, in listening to the samples on allmusic.com, they all sound like the alternate take.

My commercial 45 (confirmed as London 9780, is styrene, with deadwax of "DR 36078-1A") has a listed time of (1:50), but an actual time of (1:47).

In addition to what Robert mentioned above, on the London 9870 45, the verses that begin "there's a little cafe" (at the 28-second mark) and "in a little cafe" (at 1:11) both have Marianne's vocals double-tracked.

There are no double-tracked vocals at all on the stereo alternate vocal take.

The end of the song going into the fade is sung differently between the two as well.

Indeed, it is!

I don't have it, but can anyone confirm that the 45 version does appear on the all-mono Ace U.K. Marianne Faithfull Come And Stay With Me - The UK 45s 1964-1969 import CD that was released last autumn?

John, I just listened to the track from the CD you
mentioned online and the double tracked vocals don't sound
the same as they do in the linked 45. I'll send you a copy
for your thoughts...

Thanks John and you're quite right: the Ace CD uses the same old CD version (but folded to mono) instead of the actual 45.

So hang onto those vinyl UK or styrene US 45s for this one.
