The CD single of this song says "single mix" but I didn't notice any new mix, just some editing during the latter choruses where the ad libs don't match up. Does anyone know if the single is simply an edit, or an actual mix (I'm not sure if some of the ad libs were new.)

I just performed an A/B comparison between the single and album version of Annie Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" and, to me, the single was EQ'd to sound brighter but it otherwise sounds like the same mix as the album version.

I wish to add my belated comments on the song "Walking On Broken Glass". The cassette single seems to be the same as the CD version but the cd single states "single version" and indeed is a different edit which starts around 3:30 into the song. So I guess identifying the 45 version depends on which source you feel is the official 45 - casssette single or cd single. Billboard considers the cassette single to be the 45 version but I suspect radio stations were playing the cd single version.

I agree with Todd in that I don't think the cassette single is an edit at all but an exact replica of the LP (or cd) version.

my cassingle issued in 1992 on arista 12452 is IDENTICAL to the version from her 1992 cd "diva"

OK we are all in agreement that the cassette single is identical to the cd version found on "Diva". Now the question remains as to which version should be considered the "45 version" - the cassette single or the cd single.

first we need to confirm the label & catalog number of the cd single.........if it is the same as the cassingle catalog we need to have a further discussion..........if it is NOT the same catalog number the ONLY version that is the single version is the one which matches the billboard chart cataog number, which in this instance is the cassingle version....

I can't help with the catalog numbers, but I'm pretty sure the promo single had the edit. I played it on the air back in the day, and the song only ran about (4:00). My TM library also has the edited version.

The commercial CD single of "Walking on Broken Glass" was released under Arista 12484 and contains five tracks including the "single mix" (thus technically qualifying this release as a maxi-CD single). I also have the DJ CD single on Arista ASCD-2452 with the proceeding track listing and actual run times:
1) Single Mix - 3:59
2) Album Version - 4:12
Now, "Walking on Broken Glass" officially became a hit in 1992 which falls between the time period of July 28, 1990 and June 27, 1998 when the Billboard Hot 100 chart officially counted the cassette single as the standard commercial single configuration. That being said, I would agree with Ed's assessment that the 4:12 cassette single version of "Glass" should be considered the official 45 version and not the 3:59 "Single Mix" found on the CD single (though I originally did consider the latter to be the 45 version on the "Single/album version distinctions..." thread; I've since modified and revised this). By the same token, we should keep in mind here that the Top 40 Music on Compact Disc book is not a Billboard affiliated or endorsed publication, so Pat of course is under no obligation to adhere to Billboard's policies unless he so chooses.
Here's the way I'd propose sorting this out... Have all CD appearances of "Glass" running 4:11 or 4:12 in the 10th edition be listed with the comment: (LP and cassette single version). Maybe Pat might also want to include general comments directly under the song title stating something like:
DJ CD copies of this single run (3:59) and (4:12); cassette single copies run (4:12) just like the LP version, while commercial CD single copies feature the (3:59) edit
How does that sound?
