Can someone fill me in on the TM Century Gold Discs. What are they and how can I get them. I am not familiar with them and I seem them being referenced many times on these chat boards?

| Fetta, these are discs specifically licensed and leased for broadcast use. They are only available to radio stations and they are not sold (legally) in stores. On occasion, I've come across one or two in used music stores, but they are generally very difficult to find. TM Century is a large broadcast service company that provides music libraries, jingles, production music, etc., to radio stations. |

I know this topic is water under the bridge, but I'd like to comment on the GoldDisc
product. I've been using them for a number of years, as I own two libraries. The majority of the music serviced is hard to find because the 45 edits/mixes were mastered from promotional copies sent directly to radio. Occasionally TM misses the 45 version and uses the LP version, or in some cases they edited the LP down themselves to recreate the 45 version. For the most part I'm pleased with the product as they did a decent job mastering the discs. On the downside, the Sonic Solutions "NoNoise" technology is in my opinion an abomination to the original material. It was a marketing tactic that gave them an edge in 1987-90 and it made the GoldDisc line quite attractive to radio. No more vinyl, eh? I've spent years dissecting my "N" generation GoldDiscs, and without a doubt 63% of the cuts prior to 1990 are mastered from vinyl. Second hand vinyl dubs with copious amounts of noise reduction. But wait, the noise reduction process was used on many GoldDisc cuts taken from 1990+ Promo CDs. Some background noise is intended and is acceptable. When too much reduction is used it takes away from the original integrity of the recording. It's disrespectful. Their marketing team still believes they have the best sounding product for the broadcast industry. I doubt TM Studios had as much of an "in" as Time Life in obtaining the original 45 masters and making the discs sound as "sonically" superior. :P This isn't meant to bash TM Studios, their current HitDiscs/PrimeCuts product is an exemplary model for mobile DJ's and programmers who need the hits fast. Just please do your homework when programming your stations using TM's GoldDiscs. I trust Pat's database and the ears on this forum, first. :) ------------- DJ L. |

Yes, I've mentioned GoldDiscs in several other threads over the years. I'll restate the main points to remember:
- GoldDiscs containing songs released earlier than 1990 cannot be trusted to have the correct single edits and mixes. - Most (dare I say 95%?) of their custom edits are not correct. I've found MANY unsuccessful attempts; sometimes they are off only by a little, and other times they missed the mark by a mile. - Regarding noise reduction, the red typeface discs are really bad. The black typeface discs are much better, but still have noise reduction applied to older cuts (1989 and back). Sometimes I wonder if the wrong edits that show up on some
commercial CDs originated from pre-1990 TM Century Gold Discs. Did those people not care if the edits were correct? ------------- |

Their early edits were done on digital reel-to-reel tapes with a razor blade and tape. They didn't have the precise digital editing tools when they made those first discs. They also did not have access to any master tapes from record labels. They had to use either promo CDs/45s or commercially available CDs and vinyl. I agree, Dave. It is a very passive medium. I do think that the average person doesn't know or doesn't care. The exception, as Hits Man says, is if it's drastically different from what they remember. Subtle differences go unnoticed.
For the longest time I thought that the edit of "Let's Go Crazy" on TM's GoldDisc was the 45 version. TM got out of the music subscription business about 18
months ago or so and is strictly back in the jingle business. I have some spreadsheets I downloaded back when TM PrimeCuts was ending if you want to DM me I can send it to you.
