Has anyone made the 3:25 edit of Asia's Heat Of The Moment? Or maybe has a copy? My 45 is too scratchy.

The first disc to include "Heat Of The Moment" was the single-artist Asia album. I had the W. German target pressing, which (according to a post on the Steve Hoffman site) has the same mastering as the '80s-era US version. It's not a sonic masterpiece, but neither was the vinyl for this song. Virtually all the compilations I have use the same analog transfer as Asia:
There's a version that fades about 15 seconds early on Realm's Gold And Platinum Vol. 1 (1986) - avoid. The version on swaitek's 50-CD The A List Disc 13 (1994) has noise reduction - avoid. The version on Realm's 3-CD Greatest Hits Of The '80s Vol. 3 (2002) is compressed/limited compared to all the others - avoid. Overall, I think I prefer the sound on 1990's Then And Now, which should be dirt cheap nowadays. Here are instructions for creating the promo 45 editfrom the version on Then And Now: Segment 1: Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:00.0 in in both the promo 45 edit and the LP/commercial 45 version This segment ends on a bass drum beat. Remove the 16 beats of the LP/commercial 45 version from 2:00.0 to 2:06.7. Segment 2: Extends from 2:00.0 to 2:55.2 of the promo 45 edit Extends from 2:06.7 to 3:01.9 of the LP/commercial 45 version This segment begins and ends on bass drum hits. Remove the 32 beats of the LP/commercial 45 version from 3:01.9 to 3:15.0. Segment 3: Extends from 2:55.2 to 3:28.3 of the promo 45 edit Extends from 3:15.0 to 3:53.0 of the LP/commercial 45 version This segment begins on a bass drum hit. The end of this segment is about three seconds before the true end of the fade. I added a fade from 3:16.7 to 3:28.3 of the promo 45 edit, which corresponds to 3:36.5 to 3:48.0 of the LP/commercial 45 version. If you didn't hasten the fade, the LP/commercial 45 fade, as is, would run about three seconds longer than the promo 45 fade. John (Yah Shure) was kind enough to send me a copy of
the short mono side of the DJ 45 to assist me in creating a stereo DJ edit. Ron's instructions were perfect. As always, it helps to have a source file to use as a guide. |

It is not an early fade, but a custom edit for the video. Sections 2:39 to 2:52 have been removed, basically cutting the final chorus in half. It's weird that for the radio edit, they cut out the first part of the outro rather than the second. As the full version appeared on the commercial 45(was 3:53 really that long?) it was glaringly obvious that Steve Howe didn't start at the top for his solo. |

I revisited this song today, because I've had a question in the back of my mind. Why, in 1982, would the record label put the "Edit" *only* on the mono side of the promo 45? Just about every other promo 45 from this time period was either short/long (stereo both sides) or stereo/mono (same length on both sides). It was unusual that one side had the full-length version in stereo and the short version in mono. If we were talking about a hit from 1972, it would make more sense. So, I compared a fold-down of the stereo to the mono, and I discovered that the mono side is actually a dedicated mix. The differences are subtle, but there are some obvious giveaways. For one, the vocal is louder on the fold-down. Two, during the instrumental breakdown/bridge, there is an electric guitar lick in between the keyboard melodies. On the fold-down, the guitar lick is quite buried in the mix, but on the mono mix it's brought forward. Well, there ya have it. If you truly want the short promo version, it has to be dubbed from the promo 45. That mono short edit side on the promo was likely done for AM airplay reasons, as AM Top 40 stations were still very numerous in the USA. I agree the promo should have had this edit too on the Stereo side, as there were many FM Top 40 stations as well. ------------- I turn up the good and turn down the bad! |

I wouldn't go so far as to say AM Top 40 stations were "very numerous" in 1982, but there were still a few left (I worked at one of them). We usually (but not always) played the edits. A lot of the FM Top 40s of the era played the longer versions, in part to differentiate themselves from their AM counterparts, though that policy changed as the 80s progressed, and the few remaining AM CHRs changed format. |
