Attention, fellow Top 40 completists... Allow me to present a new list of radio edits that have appeared on promotional CD releases, but are not mentioned or acknowledged in the 10th Edition of Top 40 Music on Compact Disc. The underlying difference between this listing and the other "DJ edits" message thread is this: I do not own a copy of any of the CDs listed below, but I have determined through extensive research that these discs do exist and contain official Top 40 DJ edits. For each promo CD, I've provided the artist, song title, the radio edit run time(s) as printed or reported on the CD cover, and the catalog number. If a question mark is present within the entry, it means I'm either missing or unsure of a particular bit of information. Again, since I don't have any of these CDs, I cannot guarantee that my information is accurate. If anyone has any of these promo discs and can verify the actual radio edit run times on them, by all means please chime in with your info! Here's the list I've compiled:

Also, does anyone know if the songs listed below have radio edits that are shorter than their commercial single and LP counterparts? Most of the songs below run over 4:30 on their commercial releases and I'm wondering if any of these hits are edited shorter or faded early on a promo DJ single. Conversely, I'd also like to know if any of these songs have definitely never been issued in a shorter radio edit form. I welcome and appreciate anyone who can furnish some information. Here's my list:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT - TENNESSEE (I've seen an edit on import CD singles with no run time given; haven't been able to find a U.S. promo copy)
DEF LEPPARD - ARMAGEDDON IT
WHITNEY HOUSTON - MY NAME IS NOT SUSAN
JANET JACKSON - PLEASURE PRINCIPLE
JON B - PRETTY GIRL
HAMMER - 2 LEGIT 2 QUIT
MARTIN PAGE - IN THE HOUSE OF STONE AND LIGHT
SELENA - DREAMING OF YOU
SIMPLE MINDS - SEE THE LIGHTS
MICHAEL W. SMITH - I WILL BE HERE FOR YOU
PATTY SMYTH - NO MISTAKES
STEVIE B - IN MY EYES
STEVIE B - LOVE ME FOR LIFE
ROD STEWART - MY HEART CAN'T TELL YOU NO
LUTHER VANDROSS - DON'T WANT TO BE A FOOL
VANILLA ICE - PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC
WHISTLE - ALWAYS AND FOREVER
VANESSA WILLIAMS - DREAMIN'
YO-YO - YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YO-YO

I own a few of those, Todd:

Amy Grant - That's What Love is For (A&M 75021 7233 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. Single Mix (actual 4:20) [45 version]
2. LP Edit (actual 4:00)
3. Extended Single Mix (actual 4:51)
4. LP Version

Amy Grant - I Will Remember You (A&M 75021 7339 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. Rhythm Remix (actual 5:05) [45 version]
2. Album Remix (actual 5:04)
3. Album Version

Amy Grant - Good for Me (A&M 75021 7264 2) (picture card sleeve)
1. 7" Good for You Mix (actual 4:02) [45 version]
2. 7" You Like to Dance Mix (actual 3:48) [45 B-side]
3. LP Version
4. 12" You Like to Dance Mix (actual 5:42)

NOTE: The A-side of ALL the singles from Amy Grant's "Heart in Motion" album, with the exception of "Baby Baby," were remixes. The B-side of the cassette single of "Baby Baby" contained the 7" Heart in Motion Mix, which was the version that was probably most popular on radio. It was commercially released several years later on a reissue CD single of "Baby Baby," which contained it, the 12" Heart in Motion Mix, and Lead Me On (A&M 75021 2397 2).

Michael Jackson - In the Closet (ESK 74266) (steel blue back insert)
1. Radio Edit (actual 4:46 - artwork says 4:29) [45 version]
2. Club Edit (actual 4:08) (actually, this was on the commercial maxi-single)
3. The Mission Radio Edit (actual 4:28) [45 B-side]
4. Club Mix (actual 8:00 - artwork says 7:55)
5. KI's 12" (actual 7:14 - artwork says 6:57)

Michael Jackson - In the Closet (ESK 4537) (dark green back insert)
1. Radio Edit (actual 4:36 -- artwork says 4:16) [edit of Newark Mix]
2. 7" Edit (actual 4:46) [45 version]
3. The Mission Radio Edit (actual 4:28) [45 B-side]
4. KI's 12" (actual 7:14 - artwork says 6:57)
5. The Newark Mix (actual 7:06 - artwork says 6:51)
6. Freestyle Mix (actual 6:32)
7. The Mission (actual 9:23 - artwork says 9:20)

I think I used to have the "Club at the End of the Street" promo, but I think I sold it on Ebay... I seem remember it having a yellow spine with bold black lettering and no front insert. I don't see it around, so I don't think I have it anymore.

All these versions I've listed, with the possible exception of Amy's "Good for Me," were available commercially on import CD singles.

Brian:

Thanks a TON for setting the record straight on the Amy Grant singles and remixes! I've been racking my brain for quite some time trying to figure out the true hit single and radio versions of her hits from the Heart in Motion album! As for the Michael Jackson "In the Closet" promo single on ESK 4537, is the "Newark Mix" Radio Edit a considerably different mix than the 45 version?

And as a Michael Jackson fan, do you also collect Janet Jackson's singles? If so, do you happen to know if a short radio edit exists for "Pleasure Principle"?

Oh, let's see... how would I describe the Radio Edit [aka Newark Mix edit]? It omits the spoken intro, as does the 45 version (though it's present on the extended Newark Mix), and it's a little sparser and smoother than the 45 version, less "popping" and jolting -- know what I mean? It's also got an added deep "bassy" synthesizer line running through the whole thing. (How can you describe these instruments that aren't actual instruments?)

Pleasure Principle -- I'm pretty sure the 4:12 LP edit that's on "Design of a Decade" is the official radio edit. To my knowledge, no remixes were supplied to radio, but...

The US cassette single and the UK 45 both used the 7" Vocal mix, which was a short remix similar to the video mix and extended dance remix. It sadly had NEVER been on CD, and as I said was NOT on the promo 45. (There was no promo CD single, to my knowledge -- strange, since there was for "Diamonds," released about the same time.)

A French Janet Jackson collector told me the 7" Vocal was issued on a Japanese CD3, but I've never seen it, and he didn't own it, so I think he's wrong. I do have a Japan CD3 maxi with Pleasure Principle and two other songs from "Control," so that may be what he's thinking of -- but it's the LP version. (The US 45 used the full-length LP vesion as well.)

Although I don't have the actual promo singles for the following songs, I can supply a bit of info:

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT "TENNESSEE" does have a radio edit that's approximately 3:35.

MARTIN PAGE "IN THE HOUSE OF STONE AND LIGHT" has a version called "Edit" which runs about 4:10.

YO-YO "YOU CAN'T PLAY WITH MY YO-YO" has a radio edit that starts off with Ice Cube's talking and no music behind it. It's mixed slightly different than the LP version and it runs 3:53.

Thanks for the info, aaronk. Do you have a copy of the "You Can't Play with My Yo-Yo" radio edit? I know edtop40 has been searching intensively for it for quite some time.

Brian K: I have a question about the Amy Grant "Every Heartbeat" promo CD single that maybe you can answer. I don't have this promo disc, but I do know the track listing and printed run times:

AMY GRANT - EVERY HEARTBEAT (A&M 75021 7541 2)
1) 7" HEART & SOUL MIX - 3:49
2) 7" BODY & SOUL MIX - 3:50
3) 7" PIANO MIX - 3:30
4) LP VERSION - 3:31
5) 12" BODY & SOUL MIX - 5:21

Am I correct that the 7" Heart & Soul Mix is the 45 version, and the 7" Body & Soul Mix is the 45 B-side and radio edit? I seem to remember the LP version getting a lot of airplay as well.

Yes, I have a copy of "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" from a TM Century HitDisc. I don't have the actual promo single, though. To my knowledge, the "Radio Edit" has never been issued on any CD, other than the promo single and the disc from TM Century.

You are correct about what version is which, Todd, though I don't have the promo CD. I got the UK commercial CD single for that one (UPC 0 8283907832 0), which contains:

1. 7" Heart and Soul Mix (actual 3:40)
2. 7" Body and Soul Mix (actual 3:45)
3. 7" Piano Mix (actual 3:22)
4. 12" Body and Soul Mix (actual 5:20, cold ending)

Strangely, the artwork on the import also lists the exact running times you did, some of them ten seconds off what's on the disc!

Now... it's POSSIBLE the running times are different on the promo CD single, because what sometimes happened in the UK and Europe in the early days of CD singles was that they would manufacture what was basically a 5-inch CD3 -- it was full size, but only had a 20-minute playable area. I have at least two UK CD singles where the dance mixes were actually FADED EARLY to accomodate the 20-minute limit. (They are Paula Abdul "Straight Up" and a killer disc of Janet Jackson "Alright" remixes.)

But the "Every Heartbeat" UK CD only runs a little over 16 minutes, so I doubt if that is the case here.

I never did get the promo for "Baby Baby," either. I got the UK CD for that one, too, and it's mislabeled. It claims it contains the No Getting Over You Mix, the Heart In Motion Mix, and Lead Me On (UPC 0 8283906262 6). It actually contains:

1. No Getting Over You Mix (actual 3:59)
2. LP Version [45 version]
3. Lead Me On

A lot of people wouldn't know the difference between the No Getting Over You Mix and the LP Version. They're very similar, but NGOY mix has got some added instrumentation, including an added drum track running through the whole song, and the instrumental break is totally different. The LP version sounds sparser.

The promo single of the Goo Goo Dolls "Name" does contain the "Edit," which cuts the intro in half and, if I remember correctly, shortens the instrumental (guitar) section. The run time should be really close to 4:05. I don't own the single, but I used to play it quite a bit at a radio station that I worked at.

Jeremy Jordan "Wannagirl" promo single does contain the "Radio Edit" which is exactly 3:53.

LaTour "People Are Still Having Sex" (Radio Edit) has a run time of 4:07.

Spin Doctors "Two Princes" (Edit) is 3:28.

Michael W. Smith "I Will Be Here For You" (Edit) runs 4:03.

I didn't notice "My Name is Not Susan" up there, Todd. I have that one too:

My Name Is Not Susan (Arista ASCD-2259), front and back inserts matching cassette single version

1. Album Edit (actual 4:09)
2. U.K. Mix (actual 4:10)
3. Power Radio Mix w/Rap (actual 4:39) [Rap by Monie Love]
4. Power Radio Mix w/o Rap (actual 4:03)

Thanks for the info, Aaron and Brian. Keep up the great work, everyone!

Brian's post has prompted me to wonder if Whitney Houston's "Miracle" was ever made available as a radio edit? My research seems to indicate that the LP, single, and promo version all run 5:41. Does anyone have a promo copy that reflects otherwise?

Really? I was almost positive the single was an edit, the cassette single, at least. I am 99% sure the promo CD single used the LP edit. I don't own that one, but I do have the commercial Japanese CD3, which uses the edit as well. I'll have to check the running time when I get home from work tonight (technically, Saturday morning).

Okay, Todd, the edit version of "Miracle" on the Japanese CD3 runs 4:59. I haven't yet been able to verify what version was on the promo CD, or which version the 45 and cassette single were. But 5:41 would be an unusually long time for a song played on the radio. I can't imagine the promo didn't contain an edit.

Todd,

I just started entering your list of radio edits that have not appeared on cd and came across "Strike It Up" by Black Box. Joel Whitburn does indeed list the running time of this 45 as 3:06 and he lists it as being available on vinyl. I have never seen a vinyl 45 of this song but I do have the cassette single which states a running time of 3:06 for the "radio mix" but when I just timed it on my cassette player it ran 2:59. This speed differential could be just my casssette deck or the physical tape itself so I am curious as to whether the dj cd single really runs 3:06 or not.

Todd,

Regarding your post on Whitney Houston "I Will always Love You", my cd promo Arista ASCD 2490, does not have a radio edit running 3:51 but rather 2 versions of this song, one of which is the LP version running 4:30 and the other is the LP version faded :07 early so it runs 4:23. Are you sure of your catalog number on your 3:51 edit as I cannot imagine Arista issuing two different promo cd's with the same catalog number.

Now with regards to Monifa "Touch It", is the clean radio edit running 3:44 the same as the version appearing on the cd "United States Of Dance" (UTV 314545105) as I currently list that version as running 3:44 also.

With regard to Ralph Tresvant's "Sensitivity" are you sure that the so called "radio edit" runs 5:52 as I don't see how this could be an edit when the LP version runs 4:40. The 10th edition lists a version running 5:52 on the New Edition cd "All The Number Ones" so is that the "radio edit"?

The Ralph Tresvant cut "Sensitivity" is remixed on the New Editon "All The Number Ones" CD. The mix is called the "Warm + Sensitive Mix" and runs 5:53. I also have this song on a TM Century Gold Disc, and the 4:40 version is what they're calling the "hit" version. I don't know of a radio edit, but one may exist.

My promo single of "Touch It" by Monifah (Universal 1328) has the "Clean Radio Edit" running 3:56.

Wait... on that last post, the version of "Touch It" that runs 3:56 is from a Promo Only (music service) CD. I'll have to actually pull out my Monifah single to check the time on it, as I don't have the track times listed in my computer database. I'll get back with you on this...

Pat:

edtop40 would be a good person to ask about this because I'm pretty sure he has both the cassette single and the DJ CD single (I have neither). I'll e-mail him and see what he comes up with.

I remember someone listing a cassette single for "Miracle" on eBay a while back and, after inquiring him about it, told me the song runs 5:41. Meanwhile, I've come across a website stating the "single edit" runs 5:43 on the cassette single:

http://www.classicwhitney.com/music/singles.html

I thought I had read somewhere that the promo CD runs approximately this long as well, but I can't recall or find where I read that. Like you, I suspect that a shorter edit for "Miracle" must exist for radio given the single's lengthy run time. I've been able to determine that the promo CD's catalog number is Arista ASCD-2222 and contains one track, but I'm unable to confirm if this disc contains an edit. If you find your copy, Brian, please let us know how long it runs.

Believe it or not, there indeed appear to be two "I Will Always Love You" promo CDs with the same catalog number. One contains two tracks (which is probably the copy you have) and the other has just one track. You can see the one track promo disc here:

http://eil.com/shop/moreinfo.asp?catalogid=86839

As you visit the aforementioned website, you'll notice above the picture of the promo CD the following text: "Scarce US special holiday reissue 1-track promo CD in unique custom picture sleeve - completely different to any other ASCD-2490". I do specifically remember a commonly played radio version of "I Will Always Love You" where the a cappella intro is edited out and instead the song begins with strings fading in and Whitney Houston softly crooning. I believe this is the shortened radio version that runs approximately 3:51. Unfortunately, I can't remember off the top of my head where I got that run time (the eil.com website I listed doesn't say), but I can get back to you on that.

Since I don't have this promo CD, or any of the others I've listed in this thread, I can't verify the printed run time or make a determination if the radio edit currently exists on a domestic CD release. Fortunately, it looks like Aaron is on the case with this one, so hopefully he'll get back to us with more info on how long "Touch It" runs on his promo disc.

I'm glad you brought this up because I should've been more specific here. The Ralph Tresvant "Sensitivity" promo CD is on MCA CD45-1097 and contains the following track listing and printed run times:

1. Sensitivity-Extended Version (5:52)
2. Sensitivity-Radio Edit (4:40)
3. Sensitivity-Ralph's Rap (5:00)

Given that Track 1 contains an extended version, I left open the possibility that this might be a longer version of the hit single that managed to get some radio airplay. Every once in a blue moon, record labels have been known to feature a longer version of a hit on a promo DJ single (such as Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen" and Leif Garrett's "I Was Made for Dancing") and I wondered if this might be the case with the Extended Version on the Ralph Tresvant promo CD. Since I don't have this disc, I can't conclude if the Extended Version of "Sensitivity" is a legitimate longer radio version or just a remix. Whatever the case, you are correct in that my generic use of the term "radio edit" would, by definition, not be literally accurate here!

I found a copy of the promo single for "You Can't Play With My Yo-Yo" by Yo-Yo (East West 3812). Here are the mixes:

1. Radio Edit (3:53)
2. Real Remix (5:01)
This is the version that's on the LP, Monsters Of Rap Vol. 1, and Maximum Rap; however the first four seconds (a sound effect of a needle hitting the record and some groove noise) are missing on the promo single.
3. Hip Hop Remix (4:33)

Was this song added to the newest edition of Top 40 Music On CD? My book doesn't include the song, even though it did crack the top 40.

I pulled out my copy of "Touch It" and here's some info. The printed time on the insert says (3:57) for Clean Radio Edit and (4:47) for Clean Album Version. The actual run times are the same. So, I'm not sure where the versions on the compilations came from, but not from promo single 1328 on Universal.

I recently came across a commercial cassette single copy of "Touch It". The A-side is the Clean Radio Edit and runs (3:57) like the promo single.

I have a 2-disc promo for the Martin Page, one disc is the entire album, the second has an "edit" and the full album version of "In the House of Stone and Light." The running time for the edit is listed as 3:59, but it clocks in at 4:12.

Regarding the song "Touch It" by Monifah, I have obtained the dj copy and the clean radio edit does indeed run 3:56 as Aaronk recalled. By the way, this clean radio edit is not the mix that appears on the cd "United States Of Dance". So Todd where did you come up with a time of 3:44 for the dj copy of this cd single?

Posted By: Todd Ireland
Date Posted: 13 April 2005 at 10:34pm
Pat:

To be perfectly honest, I don't remember how I came up with the 3:44 run time for Monifah's "Touch It". Every promo CD copy I've researched recently contains the Clean Radio Edit (3:57) and the Clean Album Version (4:47), so I'm baffled here by my own information! It's possible that when I originally researched the radio edit run time for "Touch It", I might have referred to the 10th edition and mistakenly took the 3:44 run time listed for the "United States of Dance" disc to be the radio edit time.

By all means, if I see anything resembling a 3:44 version on a commercial or promo single, I'll be sure to let you know. But as of right now, I believe all U.S. promo copies run (3:57) and (4:47), as has been documented throughout this thread.

With regards to Skid Row's "I Remember You," I obtained a copy of the Radio Edit that Todd mentioned earlier in this post. The actual run time is (4:13), and it fades out. I also A/B'd this edit with the album version, and it is just an early fade, and not actually an edit.

(Please note that the copy I obtained is from a radio compilation disc. It is very likely that the source was the actual promo CD; however, in the early days of these compilations, it wasn't uncommon to see "re-created" edits where they didn't get it right.)

Hi Todd!

Better late than never, here's my contribution:

VANESSA WILLIAMS - DREAMIN'

I have the commercial 12" single and it lists two edits. Radio Edit With Intro
Radio Edit Without Intro

I'm at work now but if needed I can supply running times when I get home.

Our DJ insider, Jimct, was very kind to assist me with information regarding several promo DJ CD singles listed at the start of this thread that have not yet been accounted for in the database (If the printed times differs from the actual time by :03 or more, I've included that printed time in parenthesis)...

BACKSTREET BOYS - I'LL NEVER BREAK YOUR HEART (JDJ-42528-2)
1) Radio Edit - 4:23
2) LP Version - 4:46
3) Spanglish Version (Nunca Ti Hare Llorar) - 4:38 (printed time: 4:35)
4) Spanish Version (Nunca Ti Hare Llorar) - 4:36 (printed time: 4:33)
5) Instrumental - 4:45 (printed time: 4:26)
Comments: I don't ever remember hearing the Spanglish or Spanish versions in my area. Does anyone recall hearing (or playing) them? As usual, I don't count instrumental versions as official radio versions since they rarely, if ever, get airplay.

BACKSTREET BOYS - ALL I HAVE TO GIVE (JDJ-42562-2)
1) Radio Version - 4:06
2) Album Version - 4:34
3) Instrumental - 4:35

METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (Elektra PRCD 8534)
1) Album Version - 6:27
METALLICA - NOTHING ELSE MATTERS (Elektra PRCD 8534-2)
1) Edit - 5:00
Comments: I asked Jim about this one, but then I remembered that I posted promo single information about this song on the "DJ Edit Additions..." thread a while ago. Evidently, two promo CD singles were released for "Nothing Else Matters".

JOURNEY - WHEN YOU LOVE A WOMAN (CSK 8688)
1) Radio Edit - 3:56
2) (untitled) - 4:07
3) No Guitar Solo Edit - 3:45 (printed time: 3:55)

Pat:

Just a minor item regarding Journey's "When You Love a Woman"... You might want to add to the database that the No Guitar Solo Edit runs 3:45, not 3:55 as stated on the label.

Also, I've recently obtained a promo DJ CD single copy of the following:

38 SPECIAL - THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE (Charisma PRCD 046)
1) Edit - 4:36 (not 4:30 as stated on the label)
2) Album Version - 4:56

Here's some information on a few more DJ CD singles, with thanks to Jim (a.k.a. Jimct):

SELENA - DREAMING OF YOU (DPRO-10427)
1) Radio Edit - 4:46 (not 4:15 as stated on the label)
2) Album Version - 5:14

SKID ROW - I REMEMBER YOU (PR 2748-2)
1) Faded Version - 4:13
2) LP Version - 5:12
Comments: Yes, it turns out Aaron K. has the correct DJ length on his TM Century CD.

WHITESNAKE - FOOL FOR YOUR LOVING (PRO-CD-3808)
1) CHR Mix - 4:09

But 5:41 would be an unusually long time for a song played on the radio. I can't imagine the promo didn't contain an edit.

I tried bidding on what appeared to be a U.S. promo CD single of Whitney Houston's "Miracle" a couple of weeks ago on eBay and lost. (It would've cost over $30 to win it and I just can't justify paying that much for a CD single.) The auction listed the "Miracle" DJ CD single as having one track with a run time of 4:29. There was no catalog number provided.

Has anyone been able to get their hands on a copy of this promo single who can verify the run time?

We received in a second promo CD single for Monifah's "Touch It." One of the only times I can EVER remember a label hearing, liking, and then "officially" releasing a version done by either a radio station or dance-hall DJ. ("Tom's Diner" was another.) Universal quickly threw a printer-generated, black-and-white label on it, gave it no official Promo CD #, burned copies of it, and issued this 1-track, "Derry London Squeaky Clean Radio Edit" with a listed and actual time of (3:29). We immediately started playing this version. A second copy of this same new mix also came in - with no label OR writing on the CD, and someone writing "Squeaky Clean Edit" on the plastic outer slipcase with a Sharpie! Just letting the Board know all the details, since there's no unique identifying promo CD single catalog # for it. This is NOT a bootleg - it is, without question, issued by Universal - tons of "bells and whistles" label details - just not a catalog #!

Jim, that just jogged my memory, and I recall our station having this "burned" promo single, too. I believe I have a dub of it somewhere. Doesn't it eliminate the spoken part completely? ("Jack Knight and Dakota House / all we wanna do is make you bounce...")

I just found my copy of the (3:29) edit, and this doesn't sound like a DJ edited it. For one, the "talking" part, which is present throughout the entire song in the background, is completely gone. There would be no way to edit that out without having the master tape. Also, Monifah's lead vocal is a little louder in the mix. On my CD-R, I have this labeled as "Pop Edit."

I'm guessing that would mean there's more than one (3:29) edit--one that Jim has and the one that I have. As I said earlier, I don't have the actual single, so I'm only going from memory that this was a CD-R that our station received and may not have had a catalog number either.

Posted By: jimct
Date Posted: 28 May 2006 at 2:13pm
Aaron: I believe it's possible the DJ did the best he could to make a "mainstream edit", but ran into the problem you bring up. Then Universal, they of the "master tape", liked his concept, axed the "talking" throughout, and got it done right, while still giving the DJ full credit. This also happened with "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." A DJ took versions both had done solo on LPs, and turned it into a "duet", but it was choppy-sounding due to the different orchestrations found on each version. So Columbia, who LOVED the concept, brought them both in, and started from scratch with it.

One of the songs I've been wondering if a shorter radio edit or length exists is Luther Vandross' "Don't Want to Be a Fool". I asked Jim about it and he tells me his promo CD single copy on Epic ESK-73879 contains one track running 4:35. This appears to be identical to the single and album version. So unless another promo single pressing is floating around out there, no short edit or length was issued for "Don't Want to Be a Fool". Jim helps solve another mystery!

I'll have information on a couple more promo singles coming real soon!...

...And here they are! I know this next entry isn't listed in the database because it doesn't fully meet Pat's criteria for inclusion, but the song did reach #40 on the Billboard Hot 100...

SIMPLE MINDS - SEE THE LIGHTS (A&M 75021 7546-2)
1) 7" Mix Edit - 3:55
2) 7" Mix (No Guitar Solo) - 3:55
3) 7" Mix Full Length - 4:26
4) LP Edit - 3:52
5) Extended Mix - 6:59
Comments: Commercial single copies run 4:23.

VANILLA ICE - PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC (SBK DPRO-05364)
1) (Remix Edit) - 3:21 (not 3:18 as stated on the label)
2) Yo Vanilla - :05 (a snippet of the first :05 of cut 1)
3) (Remix) - 4:40
4) (LP Version) - 4:35
Comments: Commercial single copies run 3:23 and states "remix" on the cassingle sleeve, though it appears to be the same as the Remix Edit on Track 1 of the DJ CD single.

Jim has passed along information on a couple more promo CD singles I inquired about earlier in this thread:

STEVIE B - LOVE ME FOR LIFE (LMRCDP 07)
1) Album Version - 5:16 (not 5:12 as stated on the label)
2) Short Mix - 3:44 (not 3:47 as stated on the label)

Ed reports his commercial single copy runs 5:16.

Also, it doesn't look like there is a shorter radio edit or length issued for "Always and Forever" by Whistle. The promo CD single released on Select SDS 001 contains the tracks: 1) Vocal, and 2) Instrumental, both running 4:38. It appears the Vocal track is identical to the single and album version.

First, did you catch the DJ and commercial single information for Vanilla Ice's "Play That Funky Music" and Stevie B's "Love Me for Life" in the previous two posts? I ask because I haven't seen any updates in the database regarding those two songs.

Second, Jim was once again a great sport to pass along information on two more promo CD singles:

MARTIN PAGE - IN THE HOUSE OF STONE AND LIGHT (CDP 1390)
1) Edit - 4:09 (not 3:59 as stated on the label)
2) (no version stated) - 5:00
Comments: My commercial CD single runs 4:58.

JON B. - PRETTY GIRL (BSK 6838)
1) Chill Mix Radio Edit - 3:53
2) Album Version Radio Edit - 3:56
3) Chill Mix Extended Version - 5:08 (not 5:13 as stated on the label)
4) Album Version - 4:17

Selena "Dreaming of You" (1995)

We had a promo from EMI at my high school radio
station that had a "Radio Mix" that ran 4:15. This was
among many promos I took with me when I graduated. I
no longer have it other than in ripped digital form.

It can be recreated from the LP version by cutting out
3:52 - 4:16. It starts with the snare after "...rather
be" and ends at the snare before "...tonight". Fade
starts at 3:59. By 4:11 song is completely faded. Last
distinguishable lyrics are "endlessly".

Also, first post. Hi guys!

Welcome! I have a US promo of "Dreaming Of You," and interestingly, it does not contain the 4:15 "Radio Mix" you speak of. Here's what's on mine.

DPRO-10427
1. Radio Edit (listed 4:15; actual 4:47)
2. Album Version (listed 5:15; actual 5:14)

Now I have to try to find the promo with the 4:15 version! Thanks for the tip :)

Just checked and sure enough, the video uses the Radio
Mix I mentioned. It is not merely an early fade. The
edit ends up having the lyrics say "...I'd rather be
tonight...". Fade at guitar.

Interesting. Guess I missed this thread earlier.

I produced an edit of this song that we used on the air
that removed the rap. Our MCA rep asked for a dub of my
edit that he could use to try and get some regional
holdouts to add the song. Jim, do you have this rapless
edit? I'd like to compare it to the one I did.

I don't recall us ever getting a CD-R reservice of this.

I think I remember comparing Jim's Derry London edit to the Pop Edit at
some point, and I think they are the same. This is not merely an edit,
but a remix from the multi tracks that remove Jack Knight's spoken bits.
When I have a chance, I'll take a listen again.
