I've never heard the New Mix with the long reverb on the radio. Every station I've heard it on plays the LP version with the tight echo.

The New Mix almost sounds like a different take, because the vocals are brought way forward in the mix.

I think the LP version actually sounds "more '80s" because the drums are similar to the gated snare effect that Phil Collins popularized.

I went down a rabbit hole this week thanks to an official YouTube upload. (See the “Sledgehammer” thread.) I suppose it happens more often than we realize that the original audio track gets swapped with something that sounds better, even if the mix doesn’t match the original music video.

Has anyone noticed that a third mix of "And She Was" surfaced on their first "best of" set 'Sand In The Vaseline'?

Is that not the LP edit?

I'm a little confused. Let me know if any of the following statements are incorrect:

The first pressing of the 45 includes the LP version from Little Creatures. [Edit: possibly incorrect; awaiting a dub of the vinyl 45]

Sand In The Vaseline also includes the LP version (same analog transfer as Little Creatures but some EQ differences and possibly some added noise reduction). [Edit: completely incorrect; they're different mixes]

The later pressings of the 45 included the "New Mix", which has the big reverb/echo. (RE1 in the matrix number.) [Is correct.]

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Thanks to Andy C, I can confirm that the mix on Sand In The Vaseline is different from the mix on Little Creatures!

Listen at 0:38-0:39. At the very end of the word "eyes", there's a snare hit. For exactly one beat, between that snare and the following downbeat/crash cymbal, there are some shimmery keyboards. On the true LP mix from Little Creatures, the keyboards oscillate quickly between the left and right channels. On the other mix from Sand In The Vaseline, the keyboards stay centered. Not much of a difference, but a real difference nonetheless. The other differences are very slight: a little instrument balance here and there, and an EQ difference (Vaseline has much less high end than Little Creatures, but that could be a mastering choice). The effects, panning, and compression/limiting are pretty similar between the two versions.

Now, could this other mix from Sand In The Vaseline be what's on the first pressing of the 45? Amazingly, YouTube doesn't have a proper (stereo) dub of the vinyl 45, so I'll have to ask for help here...

Thanks in advance, and stay tuned!

I can hear the mixes are different from the opening "hey" and drum hit. The reverb on "hey" trails longer on Little Creatures. The keyboards on this version are also noticeably louder. There's also a synth horn flourish around 2:45 that has an echo effect, whereas on Sand there's no echo. This same synth has a few extra notes that follow on Sand that are absent from Little Creatures. At the very end, the electric guitar is quite a bit louder on Little Creatures.

I'm also curious to know if this is a previously unheard mix on Sand or if it matches something released in 1985.
