Unfortunately, you have to subscribe to Top Hits USA. I'm not sure how far back their library is available online, looks like all music that's current within the last year according to their website.

I have a tendency to blatantly ignore recordings that originated from American Idol (i.e. the weekly iTunes downloads). I put them in the same category as Kidzbop; they had strong sales figures but, with the exception of the winner's "finale" performances, they are basically karaoke covers that did not get airplay. In my perfect world, Glee would also be lumped in to that category but they DID get considerable consistent airplay rotation.

Either way I can't stand Carrie Underwood. 😁

All IMHO. Always happy to know that someone is making the effort to compile such things.

Sorry to ask here.

I've been trying to get the TopHitUSA promo CD collection digitally for a while now. Could someone please share it with me? Thanks.

As Richie has mentioned, I've got a 2000-2026 portion of Ron's Hot 100 project worked up. Richie has contributed considerably to this...

There exists no digital CD versions of numerous Itunes only hits because of American Idol and certain live performances being released only in Itunes for download. Not an oxymoronic statement since there is no contradiction. Unless you downloaded it at the time and paid through Itunes(and kept a DRM copy)there wasn't anyway to get a CD promo or LP copy.

Many years ago I got those files from collectors on the American Idol boards and through various other sources.

To this day Carrie Underwood's I'll Stand By You is not even on her greatest hits or available anywhere on a commercial release.

So Top Hits USA would do nothing for you for those hits. The NOW series had better quality source direct from the labels both in the US and UK. I'm missing very few edits (mostly country) from the 2000-2010 period mostly because they are on some obscure promo somewhere that never comes up for sale.

Anyways that's the best I can explain it.

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

I discovered years ago that if you have a track from Top Hits USA with that tone at the end, you can delete the tone in Adobe Audition if you change the view from edit view to spectral view. You can easily see the tone on the screen and delete it.

Ooh! Those Denon machines were really reliable (although the cartridges that held the actual CDs could beat up the CDs pretty bad). We had those at KRQQ/Tucson in 1993-94.

The mid-'90s Denon CD players were outstanding. I still have my Denon 2000 dual-CD player for DJ stuff, although I haven't unboxed it in over a decade.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I think the Denon CD-Carts (like analog carts but replacing the tape inside with a CD) used tones if the feature was enabled.

The tones were indeed used to cue the next song/ID/etc.

I checked: each tone is in the left channel (not the right channel as I stated earlier), and is at exactly 20 kHz at -30 dB. The cutoff for FM broadcast is 15 kHz, so such a signal would be completely inaudible on the air.

I never crossed paths with any hardware that actually used the cue tones, though.

I presume those tones were for back when some stations' automation systems used CD jukeboxes? Are they even a thing anymore?
