Just adding a few other observances:
The Motown Year-By-Year 1968 CD uses a transfer that I think got carried over and used down the line across several UMe compilations, such as the 20th Century Masters and Gold series. There appears to be a tape issue on said transfer that makes the high end in the right channel during the last verse. This makes is seem like Marvin's vocal is coming more from the left channel at that point, instead of centered in the mix. The Compact Command Performances is the way to go for the stereo mix. I actually slightly prefer how it sounds on Motown's 1987 CD release of the 1981 Marvin Gaye's Greatest Hits compilation just because there is a little less digital noise/machine hum after the fade. It's 100% identical otherwise. Motown's 80s CD release of the 1970 Marvin Gaye Super Hits compilation has "Grapevine" sounding ever so slightly muddier. Still worth picking up for an alternate stereo mix of "How Sweet It Is". |

For the sake of completeness, if you want to reproduce the edit from the Big Chill soundtrack, repeat the segment from 1:07-2:54 at 2:54-4:40.

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
