There is a thread on the BSN chat board about the song "The River Is Wide" by the Grass Roots and it is mentioned that on the cd "Greatest Hits Volume 1" there is a :04 countoff. My copy of this cd does not contain a countoff and as stated in the database, the song runs (3:44) with matrix number B7007J manufactured by Sanyo. Does anyone have this cd featuring a :04 countoff and if so could you please pass along the matrix number?

Pat, like yours, my copy of the MCAD-31132 CD also has no opening
countoff for "The River Is Wide." My CD copy is also manufactured by Sanyo, with a matrix # of "A77030". |

My copy is identical to Pat's (B7007J Sanyo) with no countoff.
But why would there even be a countoff? To cue the thunderclap? Somehow, I doubt a thunderstorm would've broken out live, in the studio, let alone occur precisely on cue with a countoff (and anyone who has the power to pull that off shouldn't be wasting their time in a recording studio!) Most likely, the thunderclap effect - whether it was an actual recording or a sound effects creation - would have been dubbed in later. Might this BSN :04 "countoff" be in actuality the :04 thunderclap? (Just speculation on my part, since I'm not registered over there and can't access that thread.) |

My copy reads B8109A, also manufactured by Sanyo and also
with no count off on the track. |

The thunderclap opening is not on every version, i think
it's the LP opening. The version on the Rhino Anthology has no thunderclap. I would guess if there is a countoff it's on a tape with the no-thunder intro. |

Mark, yes, the Rhino Anthology's 45 version does not have the thunderclap. I'm with you on the assumption that if either version did have any countoff, it would more likely be the thunder-free formula.
Question to the board's BSNers: Did anyone on the BSN thread specifically state that the countoff in question preceded the thunderclap on this particular CD (Greatest Hits Volume 1)? |
