my commercial 45 for the dennis coffey song "scorpio"
issued as sussex 226 states the run time on the label as
3:59 and does indeed run that length and is faded 0:04-0:05
sooner than all the so called "45 length" versions in the
db.....this true vinyl 45 run time info s/b added to the
db.....

I listened to and made a couple observations for "Scorpio" just now:

1) All CD copies sound like mud. My guess is that the master tapes suffered the safe fate as most of the other Sussex tapes, and they are gone. I've heard cassette tapes that sound better than what's available for "Scorpio" on CD.

2) The mono 45 is a simple fold-down of the stereo version. No dedicated mix was created, but it does fade sooner than the LP length.

I think I may have a pretty clean LP that I will try to pull and dub. Surely the original vinyl must sound better than what's on CD.

Aaron's right; the CD versions don't exactly sparkle.

The following discs are listed as "45 length", and use the same analog transfer as Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 7 (1991):

Rhino's cheapie Seventies Smash Hits Vol. 5 (1993)
Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 42 A Loss For Words (1995) - digitally exactly 0.9 dB quieter

I have the "LP length" on Rhino's Kurtis Blow Presents The History Of Rap Vol. 1 (1997).

All of the above have a nice dynamic range, no loudness/clipping issues, a reasonable EQ, no ticks or pops, and no evidence of noise reduction (the high end doesn't disappear on the fade).

So they could be much worse!

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

It's true, it could be worse. If you look at the spectral view of any of the above CDs, you'll see that between 16 kHz and 22 kHz, it's pretty much nothing but tape hiss. Very high generation tapes on this one. Here's hoping for a nice vinyl source in my collection, which I'll gladly share :)

The mono I seek is 4:01 and is on a CD called Instrumentals From Back In Da Day. Does anyone have that one listed in Pat's database? It is the only one in mono.

I sent you the mono and stereo versions, carefully cleaned up from my vinyl LP. I think they sound quite a bit better than the existing CD versions.
