I was curious about the cuts to make the 45 of Yes - Roundabout. I know this edit is sacrilege to a lot of people, but given its rarity, I thought you might be interested.
I cut the "Fragile" CD version to match my Atlantic Oldies Series (mid-70s vintage) as follows. (My timings all refer to the album version, not the new file.) 1 - Start at 0.40, with the quick guitar lick. After nine seconds (0:49), cut out the second repetition of the intro lick and jump to: 2 - 0:57. Let this play to the end of the chorus ending around 2:14. Then cut to: 3 - 6:30 - The second half of the keyboard solo. The rest of the track is intact. |

I have it on the JCI compilation 18 Screamers from the 70s. I'm pretty
sure it's gettable on a couple of other compilations as well. |

funny, though, with all it's edits and machinations, my 45 of "roundabout" is in mono and it sounds crappy...i would have thought that a forward-thinking label like atlantic would have given one of their prog-rock sweethearts at least a stereo 45??? it was, after all, 1972...

Jrjr, Based on all my 1970-71-72-73 commercial 45 research to date, I can say that 1972 was the last year that Atlantic put out the majority of their stock 45s in mono. By 1973, Atlantic stock 45s were almost all issued in stereo, so "Roundabout" likely missed a stereo 45 issue by a single year. Even among the major labels, there were different decisions as to actually when to start putting out their 45s in stereo. Kids were the primary 45 buyer back then, and many had and played their singles on cheap, plastic lo-fi portable turntables, often with a single built-in speaker. And the mono 45 had been the industry mentality for many years by that point, albeit waning by '72, and to some, old habits die hard. Also in 1972, AM radio was still the undisputed king of the hill, and they obviously weren't in stereo then. Labels wanted their songs to sound great on AM radio, and often spent major time and effort on a mono mix to get it. I do see your point, though, John.

Atlantic saved the "Roundabout" stereo 45 AND the colored vinyl for the promo copies. I have a 45 scan posted over on xmfan.com (it's the third post on the page): http://xmfan.com/viewtopic.php?t=85737&postdays=0&postorder= asc&start=540 |

Most, if not all Atlantic (and subsidiaries) promo singles were mono/stereo by mid-1971. Interesting on this one how they used the stock label. Other Atlantic promos were red/white on the mono side & blue on the stereo. |
