There have been numerous posts regarding Janet Jackson singles but none dealing with her hit "Someone to Call My Lover". The cd single includes two tracks, the first runs (4:35) and is called the "so so def remix" and the second runs (4:13) and is called the "single edit". My question is, which of the two tracks would you consider the official 45 version? Joel Whitburn lists the 45 time as (4:14) in his Pop Annual so he feels the second track is the official 45 version but normally the lead track is considered the official 45 version. The version I recall hearing on the radio was track 2 the "single edit".

I also recall hearing the "single edit" version on the radio, Pat, and thus I'm inclined to lean toward that one as the official 45 version. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the "so so def remix" received significant airplay on the more rhythmic-oriented Top 40 stations that were ruling the day (I never really got into that radio format). I know Brian W. is an expert of sorts on Janet Jackson singles, so I'd be interested to hear his take on this and get input from others.

For what it's worth, our station only played the "Single Edit." I think Todd is right about the rhythmic and urban stations probably playing the remix.

The general rule of thumb is to use the first track, however since the record label specified a "single edit" that's the one we consider the "hit" version. I also believe that the "single edit" got the bulk of the radio airplay. |

The dj cd single reversed the order of the two tracks. It has the 'single edit' as track one and the 'So So Def Remix' as track two.
