The actual commercial 45 run time of the Thompson Twins' "Lies" is 3:09, not 3:15 as stated on the record label. (Timing info courtesy of abagon.)

On the 2008 re-release of "Quick Step & Side Kick" (known in the U.S. as "Side Kicks"), there is a bonus disc that includes a 3:14 version of "Lies" labeled as a "Single Remix."

Was the single a remix, or identical to the original LP version? (I see two other versions in the database, both remixes / extended versions.)

In listening through several versions I have of "Lies" that run the 3:10 to 3:15 length, it does seem some of them are "wetter" and "dryer" mixes.

The versions on "Just Can't Get Enough" and "Like, Omigod!" seem to be the "wet" mix while the "dry" mix shows up on "Side Kicks," and "The Greatest Hits" from 2003.

Additionally, the "wet" mix seems to have additional percussion (maybe a cowbell?), and the bass is deeper on the "dry" mix (the bass drum has a deeper "thump").

The "dry" mix quickly gates each snare hit, while the "wet" mix gives it a little more of a fade.

My "dry" versions run about 1% faster than the "wet" versions, and are about 5 seconds longer.

All of my "wet" mixes seem to clip that first drumbeat just a hair, too.

A good way to tell if you have the "wet" or "dry" mix (besides the opening drumbeats sounding like they're in a bathroom, or not) is if you have a "click-click" starting at 3 seconds, then 6 seconds, etc., you have the "wet" version.

All of my "wet" versions have the cowbell or whatever it is, in the left channel.

NOW: is the "dry" version or the "wet" version the United States hit single... and is the other version the original LP mix, or something else?

Inquiring ears want to know!!!

EDIT: The version on the music video & the version they lip-synched on Solid Gold (both with original source audio) are the "wet" mix, for whatever that's worth. The version on their performance on "Razamatazz" from 1982 is the "dry" mix... which leads me to suspect the LP version was the "dry" mix and the single was the "wet" mix, despite the "dry" mix being labeled most recently as a remix... but I'd love somebody with the original vinyl to confirm this.

I just checked my promo-stickered stock copy, and from your
description seems to be the "wet" version. Definitely
noticed the clicking in the left channel, and the drums
don't sound gated. Time 3:09.
Don't have the song anywhere else to compare.

That's exactly what I needed to know; thanks!

Seems like the database should be updated...
