i'm not up to speed on current music listening wise, just
chart updating wise.....does anyone know which version
would be the hit version of 'mi gente'?...the one with
beyonce or the one without?...i know the song was in the
top 40 for 10 weeks up til this week when it rocketed to
number 3 when the remix featuring beyonce was
released......so how would one qualify which is the hit
version?....or are BOTH the hit version.....ugh....i hate
the current music scene!!

Ed, yes this is always tough for those of us that program music nowadays. At my CHR station and several others I've listened to in New England they are playing the original version without Beyoncé. It's very hard to tell who is playing these remixes unless you keep yourself glued to some of the CHR stations.

The song was already #1 on the Latin Chart without
Beyonce, but Mediabase is now listing the version with
Beyonce so I'm guessing that's the go to version now.

I thnk they're trying what they did with Despacito. It
wasn't really a mainstream hit until they added Justin
Bieber.

With the mega-success of "Despacito" the record labels are trying to cash-in with their own Latin hits featuring big mainstream stars.

When these situations occur, we usually show the biggest version as the "hit" version, with a trivia note showing the chart info on the previous version.

This kind of thing is now no longer new. These confusing issues have been
ongoing for almost 20 years. For 2 months in 2001, "I'm Real" was a solo Jennifer
Lopez hit, then Radio switched midstream to the more Hip-Hop edged "I'm Real
remix" with Ja Rule. Which is ultimately considered the hit? Presumably the latter,
receiving 90% of current and recurrent airplay. But then what do we consider the
solo version, strong enough initially to one point to hit the top 10?

How about something like Wyclef Jean's "Gone Till November"? The A-Side and
famous video are the slow acoustic ballad, but the version played on the lion's
share of radio stations nationwide was the uptempo R/Kelly remix.

And then there's the early 2010's trend of remixing a hit at iTunes with a famous
guest star for a week to get a higher chart position: For 20 weeks, "Till the World
Ends" was a solo Britney single, except the week of its peak when it was listed as
"feat Kesha and Nicki Minaj". Also "S&M" by Rihanna was a solo song - with the
sole exception of the week it jumped to #1, 'featuring Britney Spears'. A duet remix
forgotten after that week…)

This practice would have continued longer had it not been for the famous case of
'Last Friday Night' by Katy Perry failing to be aided with a late-in-the-game
appearance with Missy Elliott.

I always just look at what's charting higher on the iTunes
top 100. In Mi Gente's case, only one version ever made
the top ten on iTunes and that was the version with
Beyonce.
