The US-only "album version" (as found on the 12" maxi single, promo CD single and on later pressings of the Girl You Know It's True album) appears to be an edit of the video mix, which is different to the single version. The video mix also appears to be the European 45 version, judging by this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwjWME0Vnds
I have no idea which version was the "hit" in 1989.

AFAIK, the version that was on the 45 (with a 4:01 listed run time) was the "hit" version. I remember hearing this version on the radio on multiple stations and I'm pretty sure Casey Kasem played that version on AT40 as well.
Originally this wasn't on the album. The version on the original pressings was a completely different sounding track running over 6 minutes. I didn't get the vinyl LP until Christmas 1989 but that was the version on the copy I've got. I had to seek out the 45 to get the hit version of the song. |

The "Single Version" was the hit in the US. (Track 1 from promo CD single Arista ASCD-9833) It runs 4:00.
I'm not sure what was the hit elsewhere in the world. It's not easy to find in digital form. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Casey had left AT40 the year before the song was a hit. Shadoe Stevens was hosting AT40 at the time and Casey went on to host the new show "Casey's Top 40" which I think used the Radio & Records Charts as its source. I believe Shadoe played the Single Version and I also remember hearing that version on Top 40 radio. As far as I know, the Single Version is only available on the Promo CD Single and the Promo CD Compilation "Maximum Milli Vanilli" and CD Singles in the UK and Japan. However, I believe it's the more common, later LP pressing of the song that is played on radio today. I still have yet to hear the Single Version played on Oldies Radio now. The Original, 6-Minute Plus LP Version also appears to be rare on CD. The few times I've seen the parent "Girl You Know It's True" Album in the Used Bins, it always has the song listed on the disc as running 6:26, which would be the running time of the original LP Version, but the version on the actual disc is the more common Video Edit Version running around 4:15.
