I normally attempt to obtain (in digital format) the single versions of hits. In the case like this song where there was no commercially available single (in the U.S. that is), I would just default to the album version. One thing though I found when doing research with this was that the Promo CD Single as well as the first song on the digital EP The Remixes contained a "Radio Edit" of the song.
To my ear, the vocals are the same however there are minor instrumentation differences between the Radio Edit and the album version. Very minor, as in why bother. In fact, Spotify shows the same play counts between the album version and the Radio Edit so they consider it one and the same apparently. The Radio version is listed as 3:24 while the album version is 3:19. There is a slight difference right away - the album version has one "break" with the coins jingling at the 0:01 second mark whereas the Radio Edit has two breaks in the jingling of the coins (at 0:01 and 0:02 seconds). There are also other mix differences with the guitars and drums here and there. Ultimately, getting geeky about it means that I want the version that obtained the most Billboard points during its peak week. The song hit #9 on August 8, 2009. Back then, I believe streaming was part of the equation but was basically insignificant. So which version sold more that week and which was played on the radio more? The Remixes EP was released on iTunes in early June so both songs were available to buy. Finally to my question to those in radio - did stations play the Radio Edit from the promo CD or did they just ignore that and stick with the album version? Anyone have any insight to any of this? Thanks for reading and for the help as always! |

As a mobile DJ, I was subscribing to TM Studios PrimeCuts in 2009 and they serviced a version running 3:19. They also serviced many radio stations back then with their libraries. So, they must have serviced the album version.
