I do believe that the 3:49 version of "I Can Dream About You" is actually an edit rather than an early fade (the version I heard for years on radio shortens the instrumental break whens Hartman sings "whoa-oh-oh-oh"). Can someone confirm this?

I compared my 45 copy (MCA 52378) with CD versions I have on
Rock On 1984 (Madacy 1984), which times out to 3:49, and on Only Rock'n Roll 1980-1984 (JCI 3127), which times out to 4:11. I can't detect any edits, but only an earlier fade-out on the 45 and Rock On 1984 versions. Could there have been a dj edit version put out? |

I remember the 45 being an early fade, but I've been wrong before. Paul's suggestion that a DJ edit may exist could also be true.

I think there were two DJ 45s. They put the original DJ out which was the same as the 45, then a second one with a different edit available (which I have)
The second one on side A says long solo version, and on the B side says short solo version. The short solo version has an edit on the guitar solo.. exactly as Doug remembers, just goes around twice, the long goes around four. Both sides claim to be 3:51 but I haven't timed either, I will try to do so this weekend. |

Thanks, Bill, for the confirmation. So there was a radio-only edit in addition to the commercial single (which was just an early fade).
It's funny-when WLS in Chicago first played the song, they used one of the non-edits (don't remember if they used the 3:49 or 4:11 version--although my guess would be the 3:49 one). Shortly thereafter, they recarted the song and used the edit. Great stuff. Doug |
