I'm trying to determine if the version of Frank
Stallone's Case of You (a Joni Mitchell cover) on the 2007 CD release Heart and Souls is the same one issued as a single by Scotti Bros. in 1980. The 1980 single, SB603, peaked at #67 on the Hot 100. There was no associated album, like many of the charting Scotti Bros. singles of the day. Interestingly, the single was produced by none other than Harry Nilsson and arranged by Van Dyke Parks, as was its b-side, Sea Song. Some online research reveals that Nilsson was Stallone's next door neighbor for a time, which led to this collaboration. Printed time on the 7" is 3:05. That brings us to Heart and Souls, issued in 2007, by Audio & Video Labs, Inc., catalog #5637301946 per discogs. Any links to this CD for sale lead to a defunct CDbaby page. It was also issued digitally by Simba Records in 2008, and this version is what is found on streaming/download sites as well as YouTube. Per Discogs and Spotify, the track runs 3:07. There is basically zero information I can find on the web about this release, and the Discogs entry does not include any images other than the cover. But my very strong suspicion is that this CD represents the full output from the circa 1980 Nilsson/Parks sessions, in part because it includes the b-side of the Case of You, Sea Song; and the Heart and Souls version of Sea Song runs 2 seconds longer than the printed 7" time (2:40/2:38), precisely the differential of the two instances of Case Of You. Unfortunately, I can't find an online recording of the source 7" to compare, or literally any info on what's actually on Heart and Souls, which honestly is kind of shocking given the fanbases of Nilsson and Parks. Does anyone have either access to the 7" to compare to the Heart and Souls version on YouTube/streaming; or any other relevant info? If not I may have to buy the 7" (from .50 on discogs!) to verify myself. Thanks much. Edited by westofrome |

Don't know if this can help, but it also includes my opinion. My Scotti Bros single runs 3:05.2, from silence to silence.
It also ends cold. I would bet the 3:07 version on 'Heart and Souls' CD (if it exists) includes at least a second and a half of silence. Too bad someone on the board doesn't have Frank's number or e-mail address. My guess is that the master tape has ceased to exist. -Bill. |
