Big hit from 1973.
There's a 3:53 version that seems to have first appeared on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 6 1973 (1990). It's just an early fade of the LP version, faded from 3:35 to 3:53. It's labeled as "edit of the LP version" in the database. It probably should say "early fade of the LP version". It's safe to say that all the other 3:50-3:53 versions are also this early fade, and are likely based on the mastering for the Time-Life disc. I can verify that the same analog transfer is used for:

Thanks to Gary for sending me a 45 dub!
This one is pretty easy. You can recreate the 45 from the LP version or the early fade. I used the timings from the LP version on Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 14 Love And Tenderness (1997), but any of the others should work just fine. Segment 1 14 beats long If the very first sound is beat #1, then count and the edit is at beat #15 Extends from 0:00.0 to 0:06.6 of the LP version and the 45 edit Remove the 32 beats from 0:06.6 to 0:20.6. Segment 2 482 beats long Begins on the word "diamond" Ends on (an absent) downbeat, a half-beat after a crash cymbal Extends from 0:20.6 to 3:48.3 of the LP version Extends from 0:06.6 to 3:34.3 of the 45 edit Fade 32 beats long Begins on the downbeat following the descending portion Ends on (an absent) downbeat, a half-beat after a crash cymbal Extends from 3:34.8 to 3:48.3 of the LP version Extends from 3:20.8 to 3:34.3 of the 45 edit Your mixdown will run 3:34.3, with an edit at 0:06.6. |

I had this edit long ago on a K-TEL Seals and Crofts compilation LP. I thought it was an in-house K-Tel edit (since they were known for editing song lengths to fit more songs in) but I guess it was the single edit.
That Sounds of The Seventies CD it appears on was one of the handful that Bill Inglot and Ken Perry worked on so it's a little surprising that they did an early fade. If anything they were known for having longer fadeouts. It's a downright shame that Rhino never got to do a S&C compilation with Bill at the helm. |
