for those interested, I found Johnny Desmond's top ten hit "The Yellow
Rose of Texas" on an import best of called "The High and the Mighty." Unfortunately, when I received it from amazon, I found this note on the back of the disc: "While every effort has been made to eliminate the surface noise from the original 78 rpm recordings used for this issue, including use of the CEDAR audio noise reduction system, some slight surface noise may remain." While most of the disc sounds very clear and well preserved, "Yellow Rose of Texas" didn't clean up very well, and has noticeable hiss and noise. |

Several months ago I posted in another thread that Desmond's "Yellow Rose of Texas" was issued on CD from a TAPE source on a 4-disc Reader's Digest set called "A Celebration of American Folk Music," 2001, Sony Music Special Products A4 52392 C-162C (or C-162B, which is what's on the back -- the C-ending is on the spine).
It's mono, and it says "Courtesy of MCA Records under license from Universal Music Enterprises." MCA bought up Coral, the label of the original record, in the 1960s, so it's the right label. I'm assuming it's the original version. And if it's a re-recording, Reader's Digest will usually say so in the booklet, but no such mention here. I got mine from Collector's Choice, and paid 60 bucks for it -- which I kind of regret. I'm sure you could find it for under $25 on Ebay. |

In 1962 Johnny re-recorded the song for Diamond Records, as Twistin' Rose Of Texas. Different songwriters are listed, though the song is essentially the same.
