It made it to #41 for two weeks in August of 1981; does
anybody know if the LP version can be edited down to match the 4:06 single version, or if the single version has been released in digital format? |

Gene, please forgive my delay in pulling out my 1981 45 for you.
The 45 both fades in, and has its end note very softly "resolve", so it's fairly difficult to pinpoint its exact actual run time. However, my best timing effort has a listed time of (3:56), and an actual time of (4:10). I know of no CD that has the "Nightwalker" 45 version included. In fact, I know of no other CD that includes this song at all, besides the CD reissue of the original 1981 "Nightwalker" LP, where the song seems to run around 5:03-5:05, after a long fade-in. The 45 edits (two or three, it sounds like to me) all come at the start of the song. Vannelli's vocal doesn't begin on the LP version until around 1:05, but he comes in at around :21 1/2 on the 45. To me, the rest of the song seems to be left intact. Unfortunately, Gene, I am currently technically unable to send out 45 dubs, and I think you'll surely need access to one to recreate it. It can be done, though. Perhaps someone else on here has the 45, and can help, or perhaps you can locate a cheap 45 copy online. Good luck! |

Jim, that's fantastic info. Thanks for checking it for me.
Looks like I may be in the market for a 7" of "Nightwalker!" At least I know it should be possible. I really appreciate this news! |

Thanks to cmmmbase, I can now confirm there are two edits
in the LP version to make the 7" single version: #1 as Jim mentioned, drop the first 46 seconds of the song. Your edit should start just as the cymbal roll starts to become audible. #2, drop 4:38 - 4:48 of the LP version. Since I'm listing the time from the LP version (with the long intro / fade still in place) you might make this edit first and then remove the opening fade. My final edit runs 4:13. When compared to the 45, it starts out rock solid in tempo, but the 45 eventually starts to run away from the CD version. I wasn't able to get a consistent tempo on the CD version (live drums?) so I don't know if the CD version slows down or the 45 speeds up. I don't believe it's enough of a difference to be noticeable; if you want to match the 45 exactly you might speed up the CD version a hair. Thanks, everyone for your help on this; I'm glad to finally have a CD-quality copy of the original single! (BTW, that second edit at 4:38 is surprisingly sloppy on the original 45; although not audible without playing side-by-side with the CD version, it gains a few milliseconds... enough to throw it out of sync. I didn't try to duplicate their error and instead edited it in- tempo, in the spirit of the original edit.) |
