anyone know if the version of "hot legs" on rod stewarts "greatest hits" cd from 1979 contains the 45 version.........the actually 45 runs 3:56 while this version on the greatest hits cd is listed as 4:14......i'm hoping this is just an extended version of the 45.........

It's been a while since Ed started this thread, but I too have been curious as to the origin of the 4:13 version of "Hot Legs" appearing on Rod Stewart's Greatest Hits (Warner Brothers 3373 and 76468), which currently has the database comment: (edit of the LP version). Is this, as Ed inquired, actually the 45 version but :17 longer? Or a radio edit? Or just a new edit that first popped up on the Greatest Hits LP (in which case, a "neither the 45 nor LP version" would be appropriate)?

I'm pretty sure it was a new edit that first popped up on that 'Greatest Hits' album.
There were a few new mixes & edits & fades on that album, such as "Maggie May" with drums centered! Andy |

After listening to the true 45 version, I don't believe it can be recreated from the LP or edit of the LP version.

Hi 'eriejwg'
I always *thought* the 45 could be recreated from the original lp version. What's different? The mix?? Andy |

I made a 45 edit from CD one for Clear Channel a while back from the LP version, there was an unusual edit in there, I think you had to move a piece of the song around in a strange way but it could be done. There was a pretty bad edit on that 45 if you listened with headphones. I'll have to dig it up.

The 45 version can be created from the LP version; however, as Bill notes, there is a very clunky sounding edit in the middle of the song. Actually, there's only two edits and an early fade. One on the intro (that sounds fine) and one in the middle. There's nothing out-of-sequence, either.

I think I remember the fade and the intro correctly, but I have no idea where the edit is in the middle.
Tried to find the 45 on You Tube, but struck out. If it's not too much trouble, could someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks! |

It's at 1:43 on the 45 (cuts approximately 2:08 to 2:17 of the LP version). Right after he sings "I love you honey," there is some sort of unintelligible "bleh" vocal, and then the edit cuts out the bass solo. The edit starts on the first note of the lead guitar solo, but instead of editing on the drum beat, it edits in the middle of a cymbal crash. It's tricky to describe in words.
