    Posted: 03 February 2005 at 12:56am
According to the 10th edition (pg. 632), there are
currently 12 domestic CDs that feature Laid Back's 1984
hit, "White Horse". Of those, six are listed as the "(45
version)" w/ a running time of (3:48)-(3:52), five are
shown as the "(LP version)" w/ a running time of
(5:43)-(5:44), and the other an undesirable edit of some
sort that clocks in at (4:41)...

I've known for years that there were two versions of the
song - one censored, and one uncensored. The censored
version of course has the word "b*tch" removed in several
spots...

I've never had "White Horse" on CD before, so last week I
went ahead & bought the V/A CD titled "Old School Jams"
on Thump 4200, which is said to feature the "(45
version)". After listening to the CD, I discovered that
it's also the censored version...

I've never owned the 45 of "White Horse", so my question
is this: Are all appearances of the "(45 version)" on CD
the censored version??? And if so, does that
automatically mean that all appearances of the "(LP
version)" are uncensored??? Or is there a mix??? Perhaps
this additional detail could be added to future editions
of the book??? Any info appreciated.
Thanks!

Excellent question. Although I don't have the 45, I can tell you that the 80s Pop Culture Box (Rhino) has an uncensored version (3:53), while a friend of mine has it on 80s Hot Dance Trax (K-Tel) and it IS censored (3:48).

A few weeks ago, I went searching for online listings of the 45 on gemm.com, and the "vocal edit" (censored version) was listed on a DJ/promo copy of the 45. None of the sellers listed "vocal edit" next to commercial copies. If I had to guess, I'd say that commercial copies were uncensored and DJ copies had both versions.

I can tell you this much...the two versions are edited completely different. It's not just that the word "b**ch" is blanked out on the censored version.

Thanks for the additional info, aaronk. It seems there is
indeed a mix out there! Yep, I knew there were additional
differences between the censored and uncensored versions;
I've had both on cassette for years, but would like to
obtain the uncensored full-length (LP) version on CD.
Looks like we'll need Pat's help on this one... :-)

In addition to the CD titles aaronk mentioned, I have "White Horse" on the various artist compilation Mega Hits Dance Classics (Volume 7) (Priority 7983). It runs (3:49) and is the censored version.

I have checked all of the cd's that are listed in the 10th edition and here is what I come up with. The White Horse dj 45 that I own oddly enough includes the word "bitch" several times and appears on the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set. There must have been another 45 pressing with the censored version because all other cd appearances of "White Horse" that run 3:48 to 3:52 are censored and are a different edit than the dj 45 that I own. The LP version includes the uncensored lyrics and all cd appearances that I list as being the LP version also feature the uncensored lyric.

So, does anyone have the "White Horse" 45 either commercial or dj that is different from the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set version?

I must enter a dditional information that I have received
regarding "White Horse" by Laid Back. The dj 45's had a different edit on each side of the record. One runs (3:52) and is the same as the commercial 45 with the word "bitch" left intact. This is the version that appears only in the US on the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set. The other side of the promo 45 is a completely different edit that runs (3:49) and edits out the word "bitch". This version is the version that has appeared most often on compact disc in the US. All LP versions that have appeared on cd in the US are uncensored.

Since "White Horse" has come up in a discussion on another message thread, I thought I'd resurrect this thread for all interested in reading what's been discussed about this song so far. Pat provided an excellent explanation as to which versions appear on his DJ 45 copies, but did we ever come to a consensus as to whether or not multiple pressings of the commercial 45 exist?

A discussion of "White Horse" came up during another thread, so here's what I learned from the two different promo 45s (both, confusingly, Sire 7-29346) and the commercial re-release single, all of which I own:

The original version of the song is on the Sire 12" Maxi Single (0-20178). It's found on Rhino's Phat Trax Vol. 5 (1994, 123.1 BPM). The 12" runs about 5:48, with a bassline that kicks in at 0:30 and vocals that start at 1:03.

The commercial 45 is a fairly straightforward edit of the 12", with bassline and vocals starting where they do on the 12", removing the doubled second chorus, and removing the fake ending. More importantly, it removes the word "b****" and any "rich/b****" exchanges. This is the version that got all the airplay I heard, in the few times I heard it on the air and on American Top 40. On the labels of the promos, this version has "Edited by Bobby Shaw and J.C.", a printed and actual time of 3:49, and the notation "(Edit)".

This is the version on:
- Priority's Mega-Hits Dance Classics Vol. 7 (123.1 BPM)
- Time-Life's Modern Rock 1980-1984 (released 2000, 123.5 BPM; this is the best-sounding version available on CD)
- Commercial 45 (Sire 7-29236; 3:49 printed on label, according to Whitburn book; I don't actually have this one)
- Back-To-Back Hits 45 (Sire GSRE 0495; backed with "Sunshine Reggae", 3:52 incorrectly printed on label, "Edited by Bobby Shaw and John Potoker" incorrectly listed on label, etched matrix number GSRE-0495-BAA-2248-V1-RE1-S-SR1; 123.1 BPM)
- Side "3" of promo 45 (Backed with side "2", 3:49 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-RE1-S-SR3; 123.5 BPM)
- Side "4" of promo 45 (Backed with side "1", 3:49 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, "Edited for radio airplay" printed prominently in uppercase bold, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-S-DJ-RE1-SR4-3:49; 123.5 BPM)

In addition to the commercial 45 edit, there is an additional edit on the promo 45s. This prominently features the word "b****", as on the 12". The bassline starts at 0:22 and the vocals start at 1:40. This version never got any airplay. On the labels of the promos, this version has "Edited by Bobby Shaw and John Potoker", a printed and actual time of 3:52, and the notation "(Edit)".

This is the version on:
- Rhino's Like Omigod (123.4 BPM)
- Side "1" of promo 45 (Backed with side "4", 3:52 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-S-3:52-SR1; 123.2 BPM)
- Side "2" of promo 45 (Backed with side "3", 3:52 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-S-DJ-SR2; 123.0 BPM)

Nicely summarized! Just to make sure I have this straight, the 45s are as follows:

commercial 45 = censored edit
promo 45 #1 = uncensored edit b/w censored edit
promo 45 #2 = uncensored edit b/w censored edit, but has an "Edited For Radio Airplay" notation on one side

As I stated in another thread, my commercial 45 does include the word "bitch" so there must be two pressings of this 45.
