Can someone tell me the difference between the 45 and LP versions? Is the 45 merely an edit of the LP?

One edit of about six seconds during the opening
instrumental passage. Kind of ridiculous to make the edit, if you ask me. |

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good-sounding
version of this song? I would like to know which CDs contain the LP version and which ones have the 45 version? |

Crapfromthepast has been on a 70's kick recently, but hopefully he can get back into an 80's mindset, curious myself.

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

I have this song on 29 CDs. I don't think it's worth the effort to document everything, so I'll just skip to my recommendations.
LP version (3:42) Get EMI's Living In Oblivion Vol. 1 (1993). "Too Shy" sounds really nice here, with great dynamic range, nice EQ, low-generation source tapes, no evidence of noise reduction on the fade, and runs out to the longest length of any of the CDs I encountered. Plus, I consider this collection to be one of the essential (and relatively inexpensive) new wave collections, with lots of worthwhile tracks other than "Too Shy". The same analog transfer is used on (not a complete list):
45 version (3:34) The 45 is an easy edit of the LP version: Count the drumbeats on the intro. Starting with the downbeat on beat #17 (at about 0:11), delete the 16 beats from downbeat (beat #17) to downbeat (beat #33), or about 0:11 to 0:19 of the LP version. Since you now own Living In Oblivion Vol. 1, delete the 16 beats from 0:10.71 to 0:19.57. Easy. You could also buy the 45 edit on Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough Vol. 9 (1994) or Rhino's 7-CD Like Omigod (2002). Both sound pretty similar, both are outstanding compilations, and both are expensive nowadays. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I have the LP version (based on your timing) on Razor and Tie's "MONSTER 80s" and Columbia House/Realm/EMI's "New Wave Classics Volume 1". It runs a little slower on "New Wave Classics". I was curious if you might know if either one of those uses the same source as "Living in Oblivion"? |

I don't have either of those discs, so I can't tell.
It runs about 108.2 BPM on Living In Oblivion. |

I think Ron may collect CDs the way I do. I like to have all the discs in a particular series, e.g. the "Living In Oblivion" series.
Another series produced by Cema Special Products was titled "Rock Of The 80's". I think the whole set is only six discs deep, yet features this song three times in the collection! It appears on Vols. 1, 3 and 5 just in case you can't get enough of it. Volume 1 Cema (S21-17754) Track #6 Volume 3 Cema (S21-57434) Track #5 Volume 5 Cema (S21-17716) Track #1 All of these versions run 3:45, so you'd have to edit any of them to get the 45 version. I always liked the song and the video too from the days of MTV. You almost can't miss if you happen to find one of these at an auction. |

<Dave> Someone please tell I-Heart Radio that St. Louis is not known as The Loo!
