Tonight, I finally had the chance to listen to the second CD appearances of "Black Cat" side by side. The most obvious differences are that:

o The track on "Design Of A Decade" starts with the drum kick and cowbells, and Janet counts "1,2,3,4" before the guitar begins. This ends cold.

o The track on "Rhythm Nation 1814" starts with the snarling cat, and ends with a fade.


So, which is the hit version? I had the cassette single when this was new, and I remember it had two versions, one featuring, IIRC, Vernon Reid on guitar? With a cursory listen, I don't hear a difference in the guitar solos between these two cuts. Can anyone recall the story?

Hmmm, perhaps neither of those versions is the hit version. My TM Century disc has a 4 1/2 minute version that starts with the drums and ends cold, but it's about 16 seconds shorter than what's on Design.

Although the TM disc does not describe the version, my 12" copy has a mix called "Video Mix/Short Solo" with a printed time of 4:31. If it will help at all, I can break open the seal on my 12" copy and listen to it, but I'd be willing to bet it's the same as the TM disc.

What's most interesting is that the two discs in the database are different versions, but neither one has a notation. Looks like we'll need some more investigative work on this one...

The version on "Design of a Decade" sounds like the Video Mix/Short Solo, which was the A-side of the single. The B-side was another mix called simply "Featuring Vernon Reid."

The Video Mix/Short Solo was also used for the video, obviously. I would consider that to be the hit mix. It is certainly the 45 version.

My promo CD single for this (A&M 75021 7972 2) has a whopping nine versions. The first four versions are under the heading, "Black Cat" (Rock Mixes), while versions 5 through 9 are under the heading, "Black Cat" (Funky Mixes). Here are the details:

The cassette single actually says "Short Solo," though I've never timed it. This is also the leadoff track on the domestic CD Maxi Single. I had never heard the "Long Solo" until I bought the Japanese maxi, which has every version on it. (I knew I should have looked up the running time on the domestic "Design of a Decade" CD.)

guys....sorry for the delinquency....been having family issues which are ongoing....i hope to be back in full force on the site soon....the cassingle format of the janet jackson song "black cat" issued as A&M 1477, is titled "video mix/short solo" and runs 4:31...if anyone needs an actual copy of the version dubbed from the cassingle i've just received my brand spankin' new tascam cdrw900sl (professional grade).....i'm still working out the kinks but i can now send cassette and vinyl versions again.....my old 9 year old tascam was retired.....actually i banged into the cd tray and it wouldn't close.....so i bought a new one.....edtop40 is doin' just fine.....
