BOBBY BROWN - "Roni"
The actual 45 running time is (4:33), the listed time is "4:30" on the record label. (MCA 53463) |

The 45 version is a simple edit of the LP version. Cut from approximately
2:38.7 to 3:57, at the chorus phrase "my heart," and then lop off the end at 4:33, starting the fade out at the same place as on the LP version. I don't detect any mix differences. |

Regarding Bobby Brown's "Roni", does anyone know the origin of the "neither the 45 nor LP version" running 4:24-4:25 that has appeared frequently on CD? I'm wondering if this might have come from a promo single release that we simply haven't identified yet.

My memory isn't too good for this one, but it might be the same version that I have on a Bobby Brown Japanese singles box. A lot of the singles in that box set have "Radio Edit" versions, and some of them were shorter versions of the extended mixes. Those radio edits may or may not have appeared on US promo 7" or CD singles; however, I think at least a few of the US 12" singles had the same "Radio Edit" versions.
Again, from memory, the "neither" version of "Roni" on CD has the vocal repeat before the verses, just like the extended mix. ("Truth about, truth about, truth about Roni / She's a sweet little girl...") I'm pretty sure my Japanese single has an edit that sounds the same way. |

Here are the rather straightforward details of my 1989 promo CD single, which unfortunately sheds no new light on the "mystery" 4:25-4:26 CD version:
-Bobby Brown--"Roni" (CD45-17760) 1-(non-described version) (listed 4:30; actual 4:35) |

This probably doesn't help too much, but I just pulled out my Japanese singles box set. Each disc is a replica of the US 12" single. Track 2 on the "Roni" disc is labeled "Radio Edit." It has no printed time but has an actual time of 5:26. The US 12" printed time for this track is 5:30. So, the "neither" version on CD is not from the US 12"; however, it's an edited version of the "Radio Edit" and can be classified as "neither."
