Sorry if this has already been covered, but does anybody know what the story is on "Girl On A Swing?" I've just compared the stereo CD version with the 45 and it sounds like a different backing; most notable a couple of seconds before the end, where CD stereo version has a drum beat. Pat doesn't make any distinction, but it sure seems like the CD versions should be all alternate stereo version. And has anyone seen the mono on any CD?

Robert, this type of comparison is not my specialty, but I do have the original 45 and the stereo CD version, and I listened carefully to both for you, 30 seconds at a time, for each version. The 45 sounds pretty muddy, and the orchestral parts aren't nearly as cleanly heard as a result of that, but I do think they are the same backing track, right up until that final drum beat you mention. There's a number of drum beats at the end of both versions, but there clearly IS a loud, "ending crescendo" drumbeat on the stereo CD that is DEFINITELY not anywhere on my 45. Nice pickup, Robert! And no mono version for this on CD, to my knowledge. On an Import, perhaps?

You're probably right about the muddy factor. And, I didn't do nearly as thorough a comparison as you (it's an attention span thing); I just put the CD in one (headphones) channel and the 45 in the other and try to sync them up before I go mad. Since you listened more carefully than I did, were you able to pick up any differences in the background vocals?

BTW, just as you've noted the many songs whose actual time doesn't match up with their actual playing time (quite helpful, thank you), I'm finding that the majority of pre-90's songs have speed discrepancies ranging from slight and imperceptible all the way to "Holy crap I wondered why that song just didn't sound right on my CD." I think it's because there were a gazillion reel to reels playing these master tapes - all with different capstans and different amounts of wear on those capstans, not to mention the tension differences. It might explain some of the differences between the listed and running times.

Robert, I really only heard the background sisters prominently at one particular point of the song, and they were exactly the same to my ears. And I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if your "tape wear" thoery plays a part in some of the timing differences. As we've sadly learned, Robert, the differences can come for many, many different reasons. Glad you find my timing info helpful, sir, 'cause it ain't a real fun thing to go through and do. But as owner of so many 45s, I kind of feel an obligation to provide this service, for those who don't. I've gotten TONS of help here, and I really try to help out as much as I can.
