Does anyone out there own the 1980 full-length reissue
45 of "Time For Me To Fly"?

The 45 claims 'taken from A Decade Of Rock 'N' Roll',
but is it the remix that's on that album, or the
original mix from 'You Can't Tuna Fish'?

The 'Decade Of Rock 'N' Roll' insert says the track
was remixed by Kevin Beamish. My ears do hear a subtle
remix on the LP.

I will defer this to the the trained ears out there...

Thanks!

Andy

Summarizing some offline discussion, with input from lots of people other than me:

1978 LP version: From the LP You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish (listen from 1:56 to 1:58 - it's just vocals before the rest of the instrumentation kicks in on the word "fly")

1978 45 version: Epic 8-50582, printed 2:58, can easily be edited from the Tuna Fish album version

1978 promo 45 version: it's a mono fold-down of the commercial 45

1980 album version: From the LP A Decade Of Rock And Roll 1970 To 1980 - remixed (listen from 1:56 to 1:58 - there's a guitar slide that starts on the word "me")

1980 45 version: Epic 9-50858, printed 3:39, same as the 1980 album version

Note that The Hits (1988) has the 1980 album version (the remix), pitched up a bit, and with the left and right channels swapped. Time-Life's Guitar Rock Vol. 17 The Late '70s Take Two (1995) is digitally exactly 2.1 dB louder than The Hits.

The 1978 45 is a short edit of the 1978 mix.

There is no short edit of the 1980 mix.

Please let me know if I missed anything.

Great summation Ron!

I also believe, like you, the first release of the
channel-swapped pitched up version of the 1980 remix
was on 'The Hits'.

I'm also pretty sure that the 'Hits' mastering has the
first 55 seconds a coupla dBs louder before the
electric rhythm guitar crunch kicks in (compared to
the 1980 remix on 'Decade Of Rock & Roll').

Ron, let me echo Andrew's thanks and add my own for all the summaries you have posted over the years. They have been invaluable to me in so many ways and I want you to know how much I appreciate the hard work and time you've invested. And my thanks also to everybody in this group. I don't ever want to take you guys for granted.

Thanks, Robert. It's nice to be appreciated!

I think everyone on this board discovered how rewarding it is to share what we know. We're always happy to help out fellow collectors, without any egos or inclination to hoard the knowledge to ourselves. I think that's what makes us the friendliest music board on the internet. (BSN is good, too, but isn't as directed toward the level of detail that we have here.)

Happy New Year, everyone!

Did we ever determine which version is on "Essential?"

To Robert:

My two-disc 'The Essential REO Speedwagon' contains the
original 1978 'You Can't Tuna Fish' mix.

I just received word that the 2002 remaster of 'The
Hits' reverted to the original 1978 mix of "Time For Me
To Fly".

Ouch.

The mono 1978 45 mix is available on Reo Speedwagon's
The Classic Years 1978-1990 from Cherry Red. It
looks as though there are a number of short and long
versions, live versions as well as edits. It's a 9 disc set
but looks very intriguing.

Another collection,
The Early Years 1971-1977 also features a number of
mono single versions and live versions. That collection is
8 discs.

Everything an REO fan needs!
