the song "the americans (a canadian's opinion)" issued on avco 4628 states the run time as 4:40 but actually runs 4:49 and is identical to the version from the "music power" cd........this should be noted in the db.......edtop40

I have had a private message that is questioning whether the one cd this appears on (K-Tel 3626 Music Power) is really stereo or simply mono. After listening again I feel it is very narrow stereo but I have temporarily changed the listing to mono so can anyone else chime in with an opinion?

Pat, it is mono on the K-tel CD. No stereo ever existed
for this, it was recorded for a radio broadcast. On the CD the mono tape was played on a stereo machine so the balance is very slightly to the right but the audio is mono. MM |

There is a Canadian 45 that lists stereo
on the label. Could this be the same slightly (E) version? |

Live in stereo.

The original radio broadcast would have been without the music.
Gordon Sinclair was a newscaster at CFRB in Toronto, who regularly gave editorials (perhaps even daily). Sinclair was well known across Canada as a panelist on a long-running CBC television show. "The Americans" was simply one of those CFRB editorials and was AFAIK aired live. Byron MacGregor was a broacaster at CKLW, which considers itself a Detroit station even though it is actually located across the river in Windsor, Ontario. (Because its audience is mostly in Michigan, CKLW is exempt from Canadian Content requirements.) One day MacGregor read on the air a transcript of Sinclair's editorial. Reaction was so strong that he went into a recording studio and a record was released. This led to Sinclair's original editorial also being issued with overdubbed music (Sinclair did not re-record it. The record is his original editorial.) Sinclair had no interest in making any money off any of this and arranged for all his rights to be transferred to a charity. This left MacGregor with little choice but to announce that he would also donate all his royalties. The mistake MacGregor made was that (unlike Sinclair) he only donated his royalties to the charity after receiving them. When he failed to report the income, he ran into some difficulties with the tax authorities. |

It should also be noted that Tex Ritter did a "Country"
version of "The Americans". He gives full credit to Sinclair at the start of his record. |
