the song "american city suite" issued on dunhill/abc 4324 states the run time as 7:35 but actually runs 7:44 and is identical to the version from the "have a nice day" cd.........this should be noted in the db........edtop40

Just timed the mono side of my "American City Suite" DJ 45, which would be the best bet to actually locate a version that is the stated (7:35), which both sides of my promo state. It agreed with Edtop40's findings, clocking in at (7:44). Didn't bother to time the stereo side; it's highly unlikely to contain a shorter length than the mono side. (And besides, it's SO looonnnggg anyhow.....).

Just heard this one over the weekend on American Top 40.
It made me remember of having a Goldies reissue of the record which split it into a part one A side and part two flipside. It also has a verse or two that's not in the 45 version that I heard on AT40. "Hello Jack its good to be back"...is all I can remember from the verse that wasn't in the ABC/Dunhill single. Anyone have any clues on this one? |

the way it was heard on the radio

Sounds like the album version, which has an additional "song" in the suite. Was there ever a short version of this song? I also have the promo and it's the full single version on both the mono & stereo sides. Granted, it's hard to cut anything out & not ruin the flow of the song, but an almost-8 minute song by a non-superstar act wasn't common, even in the early 70s when long singles were more acceptable to radio. I think there was a re-issue single (on Lifesong records if I'm not mistaken) which contained only the final "A Friend Is Dying" part of the suite. I want to say it was released around 1976-77. Anyone have a copy & can comfirm? Edited by Hykker |

"A Friend Is Dying" was Lifesong's inaugural single, released in late 1975, and listed as (4:23). The 45 did not chart anywhere in Billboard. On its B-side was the full-length 45 version of "American City Suite" with a listed time of (7:39). Indeed, it was unusual for an unproven act to land a top-40 hit with a seven-plus minute 45 in the early '70s, but then again, the ABC/Dunhill folks had already overcome that hurdle once before - and in a very big way - with Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park." |

The version played this past week on AT40 was highly edited on the Sirius/XM broadcast. It was maybe 4 minutes long. (I still have it on my DVR and will have to time it out) I wonder if it was edited by AT40 back then or by Sirius for the re-broadcast?

I just checked out the edit version I heard on Casey's AT40. It was 4:50 and Casey faded out the "cold fade" ending early by about 10 seconds. Like I said in the previous post, I don't know if Casey's original broadcast was edited or if Sirius/XM edited it in the rebroadcast.

Hi..the second song in that suite indeed IS removed,
with the same open lyrics described,.,"Hello Jack.." at least the first and final song have some edits..that last part issued by itself as described above, dominated both single and LP versions..very hauntingly morbid..and beautiful.. Edited by Steve Carras |

You know you're really older when you think that younger singer Jesse McCartney's related in anyway to former Beatle Paul McCartney.
