My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:19), an actual time of (3:18), exactly as does 4 of its 5 "original recording" database entries. However, the other database CD, on K-Tel, runs (3:29), but has no database notation. Could this be the song's "LP length", or possibly a "previously unreleased extended version?"

Jim:

I have the 3:29 version of Captain & Tennille's "You Never Done It Like That" on the High Energy Volume 1 K-Tel 3908 CD you reference and, after performing an A-B comparison, found it to be a very different mix than the 3:18 version appearing on the duo's Ultimate Collection CD on Hip-O 314520901. The keyboard and percussion are altogether different on the High Energy disc and the song's overall sound is very tinny and thin compared to the Ultimate Collection CD.

So does anybody have any idea where this remix of "You Never Done It Like That" on the High Energy disc comes from?

Todd, this song originally appeared on the duo's mid-1978 LP, "Dream", which I don't happen to own. Based on your findings, however, I actually suspect that the version appearing on that K-Tel CD was, in fact, the original LP version, and that the "remixing" probably occured while A&M was preparing the song for release as a single. Would anyone else be able to confirm this, by providing its "LP version" details?

The database shows the CD release of Dream (R2 Entertainment 7504) with a 3:18 run time, which mirrors the 45 version length. Of course, it's possible the vinyl LP could've featured a different mix (at least initially).

Todd, I'm a huge Captain & Tennille fan. I have all their albums on both the original Japanese CD issues and the lousy R2 remasters. I also have their "Dream" album, which is what the song is from, on vinyl. If you want to email an MP3 my way, I'll see what I can figure out.

Paul sent me the file, and, as I suspected, it's a re-recording. Not sure if it's just a longer version of the same re-recording that's on their "Twenty Years of Romance" CD, but it's definitely not the original. Different lead vocal, different background vocals, different instrumentation.

Maybe it's just because I'm such a big fan and so familiar with the song, but I could tell from the very first vocal line that it was a re-recording. It sounds to me like it was recorded years after the original.

Pat, this should be marked "Rerecording" in the database.

Good job, Brian... I knew I could count on your sharp ear! Funny thing about the K-Tel CD is the front cover claims: "ALL ORIGINAL HITS - ALL ORIGINAL STARS".

Nice job, Brian & Todd! I had never previously known of a "re-recording" appearing on CD, for any of the Top 40 hits performed by Toni & Daryl.

Haven't played my 45 of this in nearly 15 years but it should be noted
there are slight mix differences no ones caught to date. The first comes
at about the 51 second mark where Toni sings "how long has this been
going on"where the original Dream LP and Cd appearances to date all
have Daryl playing a synth part that's missing on my 45 and the other
difference is at the 2:03- to 2:21 passage where Toni sings the bridge
where theres a section i would describe as Haunted House synth part
that finishes with a jet fly over is mixed much lower in the 45 than the
LP
and CD appearances. I have compared my original A&M Dream LP,
Dream Japanese and US pressed CDs, Hip-O Ultimate Collection, and
Universal Millennium Collection and they all have the LP mix. Unless
someone's just picked up the C&T Icon disc that just came out and its
there it should be noted the true 45 mix has never made it to CD.

Thanks, Glen! I have that Dream LP and the Hip-O best of
comp, but never owned the 45.

Every time I turn around, there's another 45 I have to
get!
